  • What hand are you driving with?!

Last Thursday I was taking my son to a doctor's appointment. The fastest way to get to the office was to get on Route 80 for one exit; the on-ramp turns into an exit-only lane, so you don't even have to change lanes, and I usually just stay in that lane until I'm off the highway again. As I'm entering the ramp, I come up behind this blue pick-up truck who's travelling at about 25 mph, and he doesn't accelerate. He doesn't even seem to notice that he's not on the city streets anymore; keeps cruising onward at 25, ignoring the cars piling up behind him who want to put the acceleration lane to its intended use.

I finally pull around him. As I pass I glance over to see what's in the driver's seat. I see a guy, cell phone in his right hand pressed to his ear, and a newspaper propped up against the steering wheel.

I get around him and back into the right lane. As I'm coming off the exit I glance back in the mirror, and he's still way back there, cruising along at 25 on the highway. I don't know, some people...

I saw a similar thing going down one of the extremely busy streets downtown once, only this was back before cell phones. This asshead had a newspaper propped up on the wheel and a cup of joe in his other hand.

So I gave a very polite little beep on my horn. When he looked up, I gave him the finger.

Well the 25 mph is new, but the other bit .. three words 'texting and eating' can substitute eating with coffee, or whatever. See it all the time. Some people have no common sense..at all.

I told this story forever ago, but I once saw a SuperDad in a van who was not only talking on the phone and trying to eat/drink but also slap all the kids in the van around.

He actually managed to stay in his own lane at least 45% of the ride.

. Wow, that is just talent..true not intelligence, but talent. Makes me wonder how these people have not had horrible accidents yet.

I once passed a lady going through a Mountain highway doing her make-up in the rearview... when I passed her (on the multilane part) I noticed she was driving a marked Parks service car!

this is why we now have cell-phone laws for drivers.

I am not normally a fan of laws to protect people from their own stupidity, but I LOVE that law. People have gotten way out of hand with the texting and such while driving.

I got hit like that a few years ago.

I'm on my bike, with helmet, reflectors and lights (I've basicly got a full set of motorcycle lights on my bicycle, included brake light and turn signals.)

I'm also in the bike lane.

Guy in a pick up truck passes me, and has just barely cleared my front wheel when he cuts a hard right. He stops, turns back to see me lying in the middle of the road (no serious injuries, just bruises and scrapes.)
I note that he's got his cell phone in one hand, a coffee in the other, and evidently made his turn using his knees. Unfortunatly, I didn't notice his license plate #.
He drove off before I even started getting up.

Trust me when I say that people will do anything while driving.

while i like the idea of cell phone laws, ours is only enforceable if the driver is stopped for another violation, which makes the law toothless and somewhat useless.

Maybe it's because this is a law to protect people from OTHER peoples' stupidities?
