  • Car meet curb, curb meet car

I was stopped behind a car a light and I noticed the driver on their phone. The light turns green and they proceed straight. At this intersection, if you go straight you go up a small hill then the road levels out for maybe 600-800 feet then their is a rather sharp turn before you go up another hill.

Well the driver in front of me realized they were on a straight road and accelerated to about 35 in a 25. They were too involved in their phone call to notice the turn. They hit the curb went airborne and landed in someones lawn about 10 feet from the road.

I stopped and looked. I noticed a very confused homeowner emerge form the house and slowly walk out to the car that was now in his front lawn, phone in hand.

I do hope you stayed to act as a witness. That's a classic example of distracted driving.

I did. The driver going down the hill got the better view of the driver though as they had tinted windows in the back. They actually clearly saw them holding the phone a few seconds before the crash while I saw it mostly at the light.

So, details, details! What happened!? What was the Driver's excuse? Perhaps blaming the fact that the lawn was too..lawny?

My parents live on a hill, with a blind crest at the top and a blind curve at the bottom. The guy who lives along that curve gets a car in his yard an average of once every 3 years. Used to be twice yearly, until he installed a "fence" that could do double duty as an anti-tank barricade.

Oh my, yes. My parent's driveway is at the bottom of a fast, dropping S-curve* with a large drainage ditch running under the driveway. Monthly, someone is either calling for a truck to tow them out of the ditch, or else had their car eaten by the ancient oak trees on the other side of the road.

The worst one I saw, the car's engine block was completely ripped off, and the driver thrown over the back seat when his seatbelt snapped from impact. Actually the first time I ever used my first aid training, even if it was just to watch his unconsious body and monitor vitals while EMS was called. I knew better than to even try to move him in that situation. He recovered, and I got invited to his return from the hospital party.

*Think the Leguna Seca raceway "S" and you're dead on. The first time I played that track in Gran Turismo, I was shocked at how similer that section was to my parent's road.
