In the wonderful Aus its been rather wet the last few years in summer and this is set to be the worst. Where I grew up I can count on my hands how many times I saw rain and I still know how to drive in wet conditions and NOT to drive in flood waters, especially those that are flowing.
There have been 50 rescues in the last week. To put this in perspective, its normally three in extreme conditions (per week).
All the 5 deaths have been people driving across flooded creeks.
And of course this doesn't even begin to account for the driving skills that don't make the news. When my town flooded in 08 (coastal town with tidal river = hard to flood, big deal) more damage was caused to shops and homes by the bow waves the four wheel drives 'checking it out' created.
This brings me to the new love of my life. This past week police and rescue pulled a man out of a creek he'd drove his car into - and charged him with reckless driving. Then three teenagers were charged with public nuisance after riding air matresses down a flooded river.
Keep this up and maybe they will think. And if not no license. Love the boys in blue!
