  • Cars have teleportation devices now.

This particular intersection has two dedicated left turn lanes. I was in the right lane, thankfully not gunning it because I had to pee like I usually do when I come home. As we were turning left, the SUV in the left lane T-boned the stupid girl who had run the red. I laughed heartily at her expression as I drove past.

The thread title refers to the crash itself. First there was nothing, then the SUV was planted firmly in the girl's right wheel well, like the Krikkit ship materializing into the Heart of Gold.

I'm curious, did you stop to help, call 911, or offer to be a witness for the police? Just seems kind of harsh to leave them laughing when someone could have been hurt.

Even more awesome than the waltzing Minis and Alfas in the '69 version of The Italian Job?

I'm pretty sure nobody was hurt, and I'm uncomfortable around police.

the most common injuries in low speed crashes are internal*(as in not visible) and life-threatening, usually caused by improper placement of the lap belt(it is supposed to be low across your pelvic bones, but most people wear it across their stomach-see diagram here).

My ex-husband was up and walking around after a car accident, less than 2 hours later surgeons were fighting to save his life, due to a fractured spleen and severe intestinal bruising causing necrosis. He looked and felt fine. And no one that saw the accident called-his mom who had a shattered kneecap called 911 after managing to dig her cell phone out of her purse. Because "everyone looked fine", sorry being uncomfortable is not an excuse to not call 911 and say "there's an accident at address, send help"-takes all of 10 seconds and not doing so could cost someone their life. It almost did for my ex-husband.

            bystander effect

*inter cranial bleeding(hitting a window is likely in a side-impact), ruptured spleen, bruised intestines, aortic dissection, fractured ribs which can puncture a lung.....all deadly all invisible.

Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

Yeah, you're right. I feel bad now.
The irony is I'm planning to become a doctor, although I'm more interested in infectious disease than trauma.

Don't feel too terrible. You can't have been the only witness.

If you should have the misfortune to end up in another situation like that, you can call 911 and not stay on the scene. Since you weren't involved, they can't make you be a witness.

This is one of the main thoughts that go through bystanders heads while deciding whether to call Emergency or not. The reasoning being that they do not want to get involved. Emergency dispatch would rather field multiple reports of a single incident than none at all. Heck, they'll even tell you if it's been reported and if responders are en route, sometimes even advise an ETA.
