First off. Down in Colorado Springs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5exATIaQiI

Second, I admit to having lost control a few weeks ago, primarily due to my tires needing replacing and secondarily not having enough experience in icy conditions, but I've learned my lesson on that, and it didn't affect other drivers since it was on a backroad (those were already a nightmare). But I'm not the only one to lose control there, my friend who came and got my passengers (my car is currently out of commission due to hitting it just right to crumple the crumple zone) actually lost control going 5 mph since it was just a nightmare.

On another note, I am rather annoyed at certain people out there tonight, particularly a couple who had the idiocy to walk in the middle of a busy street, at night, in a snowstorm. If they got hit, they earned it.
Pretend there's something here that sounds insightful, but is really just some pseudo-intellectual bull.

The speed itself isn't important as much as any changes in either tire rotation or direction that cause problems.

Yeah, I skidded a bit and started going sideways the other day because the roads were awful (freezing rain on top of slush and packed snow), and my anti-lock brakes kicked in. My anti-locks are crap. The whole car feels like it's falling apart, and I actually lose control and skid awfully. The rest of that outing I said "screw the anti-locks" and just gently pumped my breaks for the rest of my stops, and it worked like a charm.

At night, on ice, and a figure wearing black just trots right in front of me. Hey, if you want to commit suicide, could you please pick somebody else to help you? Person was very lucky I just barely spotted them, and have some driving skill (class b CDL's).

Regarding the link Skrae put, the worst thing you can do n that situation is to brake. If you don't brake you can still have some control over the car. If you brake without letting it go, then you're on your own.
