  • Our Stop Sign Suck

I mentioned before we got new stop signs in front of the entrances for our Mart of Wal.

One before the doors in both directions. A road on mall property circles the mall. People coming from several main roads often travel counter-clockwise and take a left, entering into the Mart of Wal Lot. The road is 15mph, but people fly-in at the main road speed of 35 at least. So, when they take that left into the Mart of Wal Lot (the road you see directly in front of the store), they're STILL going about 30. Which is too frickin' fast! Because the store has about 4-feet of sidewalk before you step into the road, so all it will take will be one child darting out of the store before the parents can grab him and wham, we'll have a riot on our hands about the parking lot not being safe. Which leads to the signs. Which nobody obeys anyway for a variety of excuses; they didn't see it, they don't have to obey traffic signs in a parking lot, it's a stupid place for a sign, etc. In particular, they don't stop at the sign that I've circled with the white circle; this is supposed to slow them down after they come-off that circular road, but people don't WANT to slow down; they HAVE to get to a spot NOWNOWNOW! Even though the speed limit going around the mall in that area is only 5mph anyway. So I've taken to standing by the stop sign and watching people coming-off that road. I can tell when they just plan to keep going, and lean out and stick my arm out to stop them; then point to the sign. Some people are going so fast they don't even see me do that. Oh, and the winners; a car actually stops for the sign, and a car behind them is an asshole and pulls-around to the left and goes AROUND them! It seems people are driving worse with the signs then ever before. I can't stand by these signs all day, and I feel it's only a matter of time before someone does get hit by a car; then I don't know what will happen. In a parking lot, all accidents are no-fault, so the driver at-fault will have to pay, but they can't be cited for a traffic violation like speeding or running a stop sign.

The wally world near us has speed humps (big wide speed bumps) because of that. They will throw you if you go too fast without crunching your under carriage.

For some reason when the manager petitioned to get speed bumps corporate deemed them 'unsafe.' I don't know why. I think because so many people trip over our other speed bumps and sue us. Or they don't want to risk having to pay for damage to vehicles.

The three around here have stop signs like that and those wide speed bumps before each sign.

Deeming then unsafe is pretty stupid when it's already unsafe in the first place. And the wide ones are practically impossible to trip over.

If we didn't have those speed bumps, I have no doubts people would get hit all the time.

Speed bumps. This situation requires nice, big speed bumps.

Here where i live, a stop sign is a command, not a suggestion. Even in a parking lot. When i worked for the Wal'd Mart, we got some signs infront of the building like you have, the police gave out more tickets to people in the parking lot that weekend than in the two months before hand all over town.

best thing you can do with new stop signs really...

park a cop out by them to catch the locals who speed on through. i say locals cos most of them will be accustomed to not having a stop sign so they'll sleepwalk through the drive. but the strangers will be looking (hopefully, some are dumb of course) around and paying better attention.

People around here treat parking lots like I-94. They never stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
