  • Tailgating Menace

So, today was laundry day, and because it's been hot and sticky all weekend, we put it off until late this evening. By the time we were packed up and on our way home, it was just past 11pm.

Everything is going well until we're halfway home, just having crossed the bridge over the local freeway with a mile to go until our turn. That's when I notice this full sized truck creeping up on me and getting far too close to my bumper. I tap the brakes enough to get the lights to go but not enough to actually slow my car and am rewarded with this guy suddenly pulling back several feet.

Now, would that that were the end of it. But, no, this guy was far more persistent.

So we turn off of that main road onto another main road on the way to the side street to get to our neighborhood, and all the while this guy is right behind us. If his truck wasn't so high off the ground, I wouldn't have been able to even see his one working headlight.

Then we turn down the side street leading to the street we live on, and he's still following us. Ok. There is no way that I am going to even let this douchebag know what street I live on so I get to a street that heads the other way and back out to the main road we had started on, with a signal so I can make a left.

And after every turn, he's right there, gunning his engine so he can go back to attempting to intimidate me. Or something. I'm not really sure, because I was laughing at him at this point and wondering just how stupid he really was.

So, we make another turn at the next major street and Nekojin whips out his cellphone and dials up the local sheriff's office. Meanwhile, I'm making my way, at the same leisurely pace I've been going this entire time to said office with mister intimidator following me every step of the way.

So we make another turn, down a larger side street. It goes through a partially residential area and we make another turn. Then, down at the end of that block, yet another turn, and at the end of that, another turn. All the while, he's still right on our tail.

For those keeping track, we have just made a complete circle around this one particular block. It's a big block, seeing as it has the local courthouse, city hall, and, oh yeah, the local county sheriff's office. So, we pull up out front and park, right there, in front of the sign that declares our stopping point to be the local sheriff's office.

The douchebag actually pulls up right behind us.

So, there we are, stopped out in front of the local sheriff's office, talking on the phone with one of the clerks inside. Nekojin pulls himself out of the car, phone to his ear, and recites the guy's plate to the nice lady on the other end.

It's at this point that the douchebag decides that maybe sticking around isn't that great an idea, and he pulls out and drives off.

Not sure if it was the fact that we were obviously on the phone calling the cops on him, or that Nekojin is definitely over 6 feet tall and not small by any means without being so large that he looks weak, or possibly the idiot finally realized that we were sitting parked right outside of the sheriff's station and he was decidedly outgunned, as it were.

Either way, the cops have his plate number and a really detailed description of his truck, and we took a circuitous route back home. All in all, he wasted a good 20 minutes for nothing. I figure we came out ahead because while all he got was frustrated at being outwitted, we at least got a story we could tell.

    THIS!

Take notes, people - this is how you deal with a stalker or road-rager. Keep a cool head, don't do anything that will give away the location of your home, job, school, or any other place you frequently visit, and definitely don't confront or attempt to escalate the situation.

You handled that very well. Hope the police were able to find the dumb sumbitch and put the fear of God into him.

As soon as you said you were on the phone to the cops, I knew this would have a good ending... I wasn't disappointed!

This story made my morning! I hope I have the presence of mind to think of this, should it happen again. LOL

Many years ago, my bro told me about some road-rager tailgating him on the Belt, riding his bumper in a full-size van. He dealt with this by exiting at Flatbush Ave and taking a quick left into the Highway 2 police HQ parking lot. Mr Angry Van decided this wasn't someplace he wanted to be and kept going...

Would this still apply to people who work on a military base, where the gate guards are authorized to use lethal force against unauthorized persons (such as the stalkers or road ragers) who try to force entry?

Last weekend my daughter and I were on Rimrock Hiway coming back from having my daughter practice driving on some Forest Service roads when this idiot in a little red car decided to tailgate me. I was doing the speedlimit and the road is very curvey so I tapped my brakes. Didn't make a difference, he stayed on my butt no matter what - through the straight ways at 50mph, around the 35mph curves and so on. He finally passed me and we saw there were three idiots in the car.

Mr. Idiot tailgated the SUV hauling a boat infront of me. When he finally passed the SUV he was in the passing zone when he finally got around the SUV he was in a no passing zone. If he'd taken a minute or two longer to get passed he would have smashed head-on into a tourist who had just come through the rock wall from Johnson Siding. *The people who built the road blasted through a rock wall to continue the road and there is only so much room between the rock wall and the road.*

We'd occasionally catch sight of the idiots as we continued on our journey. Karma was not his friend that day because we saw them pulled off to the side of the road with a county cop sitting behind him. \0/
Figers are vicious I tell ya. They crawl up your leg and steal your belly button lint.

              I'm a case study.

Though the closest affiliation to the military that I have is my grandfather, I learned that if you drive up to a military compound because you are terrified that someone is stalking you the guards at the gate will deal with the situation.

Or at least they did for me. I'm fairly good at gauging distance to merge into lanes, so I had apparently cut this guy off (who was a full two car lengths behind me.) He was right up on my bumper, honking, would pull up to beside me and start screaming at me then get behind me again and get all up on my bumper.

So I went to the local military base and pulled up to the gatehouse - the idiot followed. I don't know why. The guard came up and asked me what I was doing. I told him the situation, he let me park just inside of the gate and went, with his gatehouse buddy, to go deal with the violent stalker. It was pretty awesome watching two men in fatigues with guns surround that guy's car.

I still think he was drunk because he was shouting, while standing toe-to-toe with one of the military guys. That was such a bad idea for him.

Excellent maneuver, Andara! My mom did the same thing many years ago and I've never forgotten it. This was long before the days of cellphones, and she and a friend somehow became aware of a car constantly behind them, no matter where they went (don't remember if it was dangerously close). Her friend was starting to panic but mom, who was driving, just coolly kept driving until she could pull into the local police station. The idiot pulled in behind her, then suddenly appeared to realize where he was and took off like the proverbial bat out of hell.
