It is roughly a half hour drive from work to home, single lane in each direction most of the way. A while back, I was a bit slow getting out of work and when I finally got onto the highway, there wasn't a vehicle in front of me. It was a real nice day, so had all the windows and sunroof open, cruise control set a bit above the speed limit, and the radio playing as I was waiting for the local news. I also had my ipod connected to the stereo, but it wasn't playing.
Couple minutes out of city where I work, a SUV-tank comes roaring up on my back bumper and becomes very offended that I am not speeding up for him. So much so that he flashes his lights, revs his engine a lot, tries to insist that my back bumper should be much further ahead. (With how local roads are, I would need to slow down a lot to pull over safely, and with how close SUV-tank was to me, I had serious concerns about being able to do so safely.) At this point, I am starting to get a bit irritated and figure the music may as well match my mood. Using the steering wheel controls in my new subaru (love, love this car, and it's all mine. ) I switch from the radio to the ipod, that had Nightwish's End of All Hope queued up.
Well, you would have thought I had flipped on police lights and a siren with how quickly suv-tank stood on the brakes to let space open up between us. The front of the other vehicle did a serious dip not even five seconds into the song.
As the metal goodness played, kept glancing into my rear view to see suv-tank keeping its distance. At the end of the song, I flip it back to the radio hoping to catch the local news.
Not even halfway through whatever song was playing, suv-tank was back on my back bumper, reving the engine, lights flashing, driver gesturing madly, and still no where I can pull over safely.
Back to the ipod for another song, and again the suv-tank stands on the brakes with how the front of the vehicle dipped and how quickly space opened back up. Play a song with the suv-tank keeping its distance.
Switch back to the radio as I really want to catch the local news, and not even halfway through the song on the radio, suv-tank is back on my back bumper, lights flashing, etc. Until I switch back to the ipod.
Did the switch between radio and ipod a good 3-4 times, with the suv-tank getting on my back bumper for the radio each and every time, before I just left it on my ipod with an assortment of Nightwish and Van Canto.
Until, we get to a spot where my lane widens into two lanes for passing. I switch it back to the radio, still hoping for the local news and give suv-tank plenty of space to pass me, I even turn off cruise control (at speed limit) and drop to 10km/h under the speed limit, I'm now going 80 in a 90km/h zone, plus there are two lanes so suv-tank will now pass me and I can enjoy what's left of my drive home. Right?
Suv-tank gets right back on my bumper, lights flashing, engine revving, etc. I even change lanes. Guess who follows me rather then passing me in the right lane. Go on, guess.
As the end of the passing lane is rapidly approaching and suv-tank is still on my back bumper, I figure I've given suv-tank enough chances to get past me and now they can just enjoy the drive. I speed back up to the speed limit, entering the single lane for the rest of the trip until the approach to Community2, setting the cruise control (at speed limit), and back to the ipod for some Van Canto on the rest of the drive home.
Suv-tank kept its distance the rest of the drive until the approach to Community2, where it again widens into two lanes. This time I stayed at the speed limit as suv-tank speeds up and pulls even with me, the driver gestures wildly while yelling something at me (suv-tank is swerving in its lane during this) before speeding off into the distance.
Only to have to slow down rapidly as there was a traffic jam just around the corner.
Bonus brain burp
Same setup as above, no vehicles in front of me, cruise control set to a bit above the speed limit. Behind me roars up a sports car of some sort. Sits on my back bumper for a bit, flashing his lights at me, thoroughly annoying me until he passes me, safely at a spot where it widens to two lanes.
Since there was no other traffic on the road and I was now annoyed by mr speedracer, I sped up to keep up with him (while keeping a safe distance back). I remember thinking as we were going along the highway that for all the 'You are in my way, move it' he had exhibited, he really wasn't going that fast. ... Until I looked at my speedometer. 125+ in a 90km/h zone. oops.
Yes, I slowed way down before entering the next community and continued on my way in the speed limit. Hopefully a cop saw mr speedracer, but I don't have high hopes for local law enforcement.
