  • Dear Middle School Kids

    Dear Middle School Kids,

I know you are in a hurry to get to the bus stop, but you have to cross a major highway to get there. It would be nice for those of us driving if you would not run out into morning traffic in the dark wearing dark clothes. Twice now I have had to slam on my brakes to keep from hitting you when you have ran out infront of my car.

    Thank you

Maybe let the school know so they can do safety awareness with the students?

I remember when our school bus driver taught us the "cell phone wave" to signal cars (and the bus) of our presence in the dark.

I have called the middle school and informed them. They are going to do a safety session with the kids in homeroom tomorrow

When I worked at the wholesale club during the year of the Snowpocalypse, the lights in our parking lot went out. As Hoss and I had to collect carts in the evenings, and we both happened to be wearing dark coats (although we did wear the reflective vests provided over those), I got a cheap flashlight for the person on the front of the cart line to wave ahead of him.

Nowadays, if I was doing it, I'd use my "Brightest Flashlight" app on my smart phone.

Not sure about the kids in your area, but around here the schools can have all the safety sessions they want to - but the kids will NOT listen. As in go in one ear, out the other.

I see way too many of them zoned out with earbuds and smartphones wandering around to count. Not to mention wearing dark clothes and crossing the street before daylight.

I just about had a heart attack the other night, as I had to hit the brake for a bike rider who didn't look before going into the intersection. All dark clothes. That's fine, but look first, dude. I know he has the right-of-way, but still.

He would be given what my family calls his dead rights. Sure, he's right, but he's dead.
