I'm another one who has absolutely no reaction to codeine. Hydrocodone, on the other hand . . . Ohhhh, that's some *good* shite.

As for pain killers, I found out the hard way that codeine has absolutely no discernable effect on me whatsoever. I was in an accident, and the extent of my injury was that I strained pretty much every muscle in my lower back. I then discovered that it is just about impossible to do anything (including breathing) without using muscles in your lower back. Luckily for me, Vicodin works like a charm, usually with only a half or quarter dose.

Thats funny I am exactly the opposite. Codeine makes me very very happy, when I had surgery on the bones in my foot thats what they gave me, and I only needed to take one the day after surgery to get the pain under control, and I was fine with Tylenol for the rest of my recovery. When I had my wisdom teeth pulled, they gave me Vicodin, and it did absolutely nothing! Thankfully I still had plenty of codeine left over from my foot to take.

Wow. How'd they mistake tonsillitis for an ear infection?

I actually have chronic sinusitis and about every 10-20 months I get downed with a nasty sinus infection. And they still check my throat and will sometimes take cell samples even when it's fairly obvious that it's the same old problem.

My brother had his tonsils out when he was little. Mine are like teflon, though, and I hardly even get sore throats. Although I did lose most of my voice a couple of years back, and I went in to make sure it wasn't strep (which someone else at the office actually did have).

And about antibiotics: Take every single dose of any antibiotic you ever get!

Seriously, you never want to quit on your antibiotics. While it's not great, there is a chance that whatever you have will not only come back, but it may become resistant to the antibiotic as well, which is a very bad thing.

WHShit, sorry to hear about your tonsilitus As a former sufferer, I definitely feel your pain! Here's a few things you can try to ease the pain a little

You can try aspirin gargles - dissolve some soluble aspirin in some water and gargle. I wouldn't reccomend doing it more than twice a day though.
Honey is also a good idea, as it is a natural antibiotic, antiseptic and anaesthetic. Plus it tastes nicer than aspirin. Remember to take plenty of water and get lots of sleep. Taking too many painkillers can actually raise your tolerance threshold after a while, so that you may end up taking more than you used to just to get the same result.

Antibiotics won't do a thing for tonsillitus as it's a viral infection Hope you feel well soon!!

    Off topic...but not totally.
    take paracetamol (Brit asprin).
Aspirin and paracetamol are different drugs, with some similar properties (analgesic and anti-fever)

So, I tell the Assistant Manager, Rosemary, that I have tonsilitus. And she laughs in a way that says "oh, is that all?" And tells me that I have to stop taking painkillers. I just said "I have to take them" and she said "no, you need to stop".
Ask her where she got her medical degree, to be able to offer such advice.

My son had a double ear infection a couple of weeks ago, and four days on antibiotics cleared it RIGHT up!
    OT

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE...if you take antibiotics, take the WHOLE regimen. do NOT stop just because you feel better, or they "don't work." At least give them a chance to kill out all of whatever they can, and not let the bugs build up resistance.

I just finished up 10 days on erythromyacin (sp?) and it did not knock out my sinus infection like I was hoping it would, so it's back to the doc to get something else. The hubby and I have been exposed to (and have been fighting) MRSA, so I will probably have to call in the "big guns" which sux, as I will be having surgery in May and will have to have pre-surgery ABs then, too.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread...

She isn't one of those dipsh*ts who think painkillers are TEH POISON EEBILLNESS and will damn you and such? Helloooo...how else are we supposed to stop agonising pain in the orifices? Screw that herbal crap - sorry, but I'd rather go with something that WORKS, damn it.

I'm very vocal on things like this......'tis my body and I'll feed it with what I desire.

P'raps off topic, but I feel your pain, WHS - over the Xmas period I had an ear infection pretty much as bad as you describe. They gave me Solpadol for it...what a way to discover me + codeine =/= good...I was nigh-on comatose for a day and couldn't eat a thing!!! Sooo I stopped taking that....t'was a good enough experience that I'm hanging on to it for book ideas, but I managed to get the infection down enough to get one ear syringed, then I could hear properly again!! My left still goves me trouble, though...time to sort that out too.

    Off topic...but not totally.

Went to the hospital today and behold....reason the antibiotics did not work was because I do not have an ear infection....I have tonsilitus! Joy of joys! They refused to give me painkillers and told me to take paracetamol (Brit asprin). I am so sick of doctors telling you to take paracetamol. IT DOES NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME! I tell them this and they insist that it does help. No! I am taking 4 Neurofen Plus to go to sleep (for all you non- brits...that is an over the counter drug with Ibuprofen an Codeine) and I spent a good 20 minutes after I got home crying by myself cause it hurt so much and felt as if my head was going to burst from the pain and pressure. I had to take more painkillers and go to sleep for relief. Paracetamol...my friggin' ass! Weird though, they also sell co-codamol over the counter (paracetamol and codeine) and that does nothing for me either.

Also, before going home, I had to go any buy Jamie's Easter eggs and I had to stop into work to keep them there so he does not find and eat them before Easter (he is like a girl with chocolate). So, I tell the Assistant Manager, Rosemary, that I have tonsilitus. And she laughs in a way that says "oh, is that all?" And tells me that I have to stop taking painkillers. I just said "I have to take them" and she said "no, you need to stop".

Ok, what, does she think I am addicted to them? She has known me for 2 weeks. That is all. What happened is I had told her and a few other employees that I had to take 4 to go to sleep and that I had to take them during the day to ease the pain. I used to take Opiates for my back and had taken them for "recreation" before (years ago) but now it is purely for this. I guess she seems to think that since I seem ok at work and I said I am taking so many that I have some sort of problem...but I am only ok at work cause I am loaded on pills! So, tomorrow I am going to not take any and let her see how much pain I am in. It just pisses me off that she thinks I am taking them just to take them and that I am overreactig as to how much it hurts. I shouldn't even be at work...but I am, so she needs to shut up! Grr...sorry, had to rant.

I was halfway into a short rant on how people want the same system here in the US, then realized I shouldn't. Amazing considering I had another wonky server last night that kept me up late (maybe it's alergy season for IBM servers too ). Off to Fratching with it, as time permits. Maybe early next week, the way things are going.

    More OT:

Also on the ear infection... if you've got an iPod with earbuds... could they be the cause or have contributed? I only use over-the-ear headphones, and even then, I wear them only half covering my ears most times.

The "voucher"....to make it clear to everyone....

The voucher is actually something that we give out to every customer. If you buy gum, you get a voucher. It is not a loyalty thing and it has an expiry date. It is also not a gift certificate. Good for 1-2 weeks depending on which one you get.

It is like a coupon that you cut out of the newspaper.....so hope it is clear now.

By the way, I am an American and have lived in London for the past 4 years...so I am starting to use "britspeak" as it was put! LOL.......I had better brush up on my American as I am viviting home next month!
