  • Um, slot machines don't work like that

I am walking through the casino floor the other day, heading to clock out and go home when I get stopped by a guest (I was still in uniform).

SC: Hey, you! *waves me over*
(I COULD have kept walking, but our casino management is VERY hardcore when it comes to helping guests, so I bit the bullet)
Me: Hi, what can I help you with?
SC:You people have rigged this machine so I won't win anything!
(Technically we have rigged almost ALL the machines in the casino that way but I sense this guy is on about something different...)
    Me: What do you mean?
SC: The machine was playing fine. It kept taking my money and taking my money and then that guy *points to slot tech* came and fiddled with it and now it's not paying out like it should be!
Me: Why do you think it should be paying out?
SC: Are you a moron or something? I was feeding this machine for 40 minutes, I KNOW it was about ready to pay out! I know that's how these machines work and I know that guy came over to make sure that didn't happen. I'm on to you people, I won't let you get away with this!
Me: Sir, calm down, why was the slot tech fiddling with the machine?
SC: Some message popped up on it, some loose panel or something. I called him over to fix it, but I saw him messing around with all kinds of stuff in there. I know you sent him over to rip me off!
Me: Sir, CALM DOWN. Slot techs do not rip people off, they simply service the machines and contrary to what you believe, slot payouts are random, there's no such thing as a machine that's "ready to pay out".
SC: Oh of course that's what all you people say, but I know you're lying. I know you have these things rigged. I know what's going on here!
Me: There is NOTHING going on here. If you are not having any luck at this machine may I suggest moving to a different one.
SC: I'm not going anywhere until I find out what you people did to this machine! I will not stand idly by and let you take my money!
Me: Ok sir, let's see if we can get to the bottom of this.

At this point I call over the aforementioned slot tech AND a floor supervisor to deal with this guest and quietly slip away once they arrive.

Found out later the guy continued to be a douchebag and eventually had to be escorted out by security, still ranting about how we were robbing him.

Oh and the problem with the machine? A slightly loose latch. A non-electrical item that in no way affects gameplay, just a plain metal latch.

Dude, if you "know they're rigged", why the heck are you playing them at all?!

Oh yeah, you all were holding guns to his head and forcing him to hand over his money...oh, you weren't? Huh. I guess he doesn't have a robbery case, then.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

If slot machines worked the way he thinks they should, there'd be fist fights over when people get to use a machine!

You ever try to sit at a slot that a hardcore gambler is using? You know, one of those people who play 3 or 4 machines at a time? They all share this delusion, and if you try to get between them and 'their' machine, they can freak out in any way imaginable.

I don't remember where I read the following exchange, possibly on this very website:

SC: You can't win if you don't play.

: And you can't lose if you don't play as well.

                    War Games?

My father used to repair slot machines back in the mechanical "one armed bandit" days.
There was one particular model that he told me about that would glitch and always pay out at least every 12th or 13th spin. It might go more often then than but never more than 12 or 13 losing spins
That said the payout may only be a couple of coins so even if you sat played 13 times you'd still be behind.

I hate when people tell us the machine are "too tight" and how we're not paying them properly. dude, it's GAMING. they control everything. It's also called gambling for a reason...

I hate it when I am off the clock and in uniform and I get asked crap too. I just want to get the hell out of there but nooo I get stopped. One time I was browsing in the gift shop and these idiots kept asking me questions about stuff that I had no clue about because I wasn't that department. I finally walked away after saying I don't know...

No shit, I remember the absolute shit fit that our compliance officer was having because our hold was 3% above the state's limit and how much trouble we'd be in if one of our jackpots didn't pay out soon and bring our monthlies down to what the state expected. The casino would much rather err on the side of paying out too much, it is much easier to answer to stock holders than the gaming commission.

I live in a gambling state (Nevada) so I can totally relate. When I go to the casinos (not often),I take *exactly* how much money I want to lose (plus tip money for my free drinks....it's a local thing) and when my money's gone, I call a cab and head home.

That's just the way it works. This dolt obviously doesn't get the fact that if you could tell which machines were going to pay off, you'd be gambling for a living I stead of working at a casino...
