Paying For The Gas Would've Been Cheaper!

A number of states treat gas theft differently than shoplifting of the same dollar value. Specifically, in addition to the normal penalty, there's also a license suspension. Did this event happen in a "steal gas, lose your license" state?

I got out of a ticket once by having the flu....A FAR more effective technique than arguing, but I can't say I recommend it.

You were honest with the officer, he could probably see that you were sick and I'm sure he appreciated that you didn't want to give him the flu. Just goes to show, politeness, truthfulness and cooperation goes much further with the police than antagonism. But yeah, no fun and not really recommended.
