This happened at the end of a day shift. Now, the way I see it, once my shift is over, that's it and I'm going home. While a manager can stay later, they can claim back the extra hours and go home early the next day. I can't, and I wouldn't get paid a thing for staying late.

Basically, I was at the end of my shift. There was a humungous queue, partly cuz of the time of day, but also cuz one of the colleagues doing the late shift was outside helping a disabled customer. When it came to the end of my shift, I put a sign up, cashed up my till and left. As I was walking past the queue, I heard an SC mutter, "Why can't she just stay til the queue goes?"

I didn't answer, but had I been able to I would have informed the SC that a) I don't work for free, and had I waited til the queue went down, I would have worked half an hour at least unpaid overtime; b) my colleague is coming back in as soon as he's finished helping the customer (in fact, as I went out the door, he came back in) and c) if you don't want to wait, then don't come in at our busiest time.

Wouldn't it be nice to ask that guy, "Do you work for free? No? Well, neither do I."

When I was new at the cent store, it was time for me to clock out and the other person on the register with me suddenly realized that she hadn't taken her break. Our manager was right there, but didn't offer to jump on the register, so I said that I'd stay so she could get her break. Manager thanked me for doing that and walked away.

Of course I didn't get paid for those extra 15 minutes. From then on in, I worked the times I was scheduled and only those times, only to get told that I'm not a team player.

I always hate people who say that. "There's no 'i' in team"... well, you can't have "stupid" without "u" if you think that being a team player means working for free!

I was just starting that job, so didn't want to make waves. I considered it to be a valuable learning experience on how things worked there.

"There's no I in team" doesn't really mean anything, either. I know what they WANT it to mean. They want it to mean that if you are in a team you are no longer an individual, and must behave as a cog which has no feelings or needs. But, as you've done, you can pick any word an use it to make some point. Really, when someone uses that phrase it means you are doing something THEY don't like, but you aren't breaking a specific policy, so they resort to guilting you by saying that you are somehow hurting "the team."

Also I hate tautologies. "Do what you have to do" is meaningless.
