  • Fainting is Rude

One of our interns has sickle cell anemia.
She is often very ill, very tired and very frail.
One night at work, she passed out cold while trying to help a customer.

    Her coworkers called an ambulance.
The customer called corporate and complained.

Why are people so fucking evil?

That to me is the action of a sociopath, not a human being.

I really hope your intern is OK, and that the sorry thing that complained buys a ban from your store.

I don't know why I'm still surprised at stories like this. I suppose I'm just a hopeless optimistic about the state of the human race.

Ah well, you see, it's a well-known fact that all retail / service / customer facing staff are lazy workshy SOB's who are always looking for the slightest reason to slack off and not do their jobs. So it's important that when customers see these employees passing out / being sick / gushing blood / losing limbs, they report it at once to nip this kind of behaviour in the bud.

Unfortunately, their selfishness is not limited to just employees. I posted a while back about having an allergic reaction on a plane. The flight crew, upon finding out what the allergy is to, declined to serve tomato juice the rest of the flight. The guy sitting in the row behind me pitched a fit about it. I'm sure he complained to corporate and probably got a bunch of free miles out of it.

If I'm not mistaken, sickle cell anemia is invariably fatal.

                Life is invariably fatal.

I'm not sure, but I think sickle cell patients who can accept red blood cell transfusions have a chance of a semi-normal life. Bone marrow is what makes red blood cells, and a transplant of marrow from a compatible healthy donor can help some patients.

It's a nasty and permanent condition, but not necessarily a fatal one (except in the sense that we're all gonna die someday).

                1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
                2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Is the intern OK? No (additional) issues caused by the fainting (and presumed fall)?

I guess the cowardly caller didn't say anything in front of the other employees?

Because that would have grounds for a mass-effect act of evil right back at them.

In a just world, he would have got around 6 free miles out of it. After all, passenger jets cruise at roughly 30,000 feet.
