BN has a checklist that the secret shopper fills out, and every employee sees it and knows what the shopper is and is not looking for. Then the report is posted when the manager gets it. They only pay the shopper 10 bucks or whatever, so they will invariably buy something small like a magazine. I've never spotted one, since there are plenty of people who only buy a magazine, but if someone is spending $100, you know it's not a secret shopper. The other things they do: they go to a shelf and pick any book, then go to customer service and ask for that book, and see if the person walks them to the section and hands it to them. Then they ask for a title that corporate gives them that they know is not in stock and see if the person offers to order it and/or call another store for them. They also have a separate checklist for the cafe, to see if they are offered something from the bake case, how long it takes them from when they get on line to when they get their drink, cleanliness of tables, etc.
