It sounds to me like she's trying to scam and possibly use her mom's b/f's house as collateral (and legally she has NO rights to the property if her name is not on the deed) and clearly not realizing how the process works. And I think she thinks as long as someone else's name is on the paperwork, she's not responsible.
This is exactly what I was thinking too. And it WON'T work...

$5 a MONTH on Student loans? At that rate they won't be paid off for several THOUSAND years.
And I'll bet she got some kind of Genderfluid Underwater Basket Weaving degree.

Or even better, a Communications degree!

This couple came back the next day and attempted to cash a cashier's check drawn on some other bank. The teller refused to cash the check, since they don't have an account with us. She didn't get a good look at the check, so it's hard to say, but it sounds like they got a loan somewhere else and wanted to cash it here. But if that were the case, why not cash it where they got the loan? The whole thing sounds fishy.

No kidding. Cashier's checks are not immune to forgery. About 10 years ago, when a tax office closed for the season, someone grabbed all the voided blank refund checks rather than shred them. Some turned up in quite a few currency exchanges in the area

Some loan places aren't actually banks, and don't keep cash on the premises. I got a loan at a place like that once, but they did have arrangements at an actual bank where I could have cashed it. But since I have a bank account, I just deposited it there.

I suspect the $5 a month was one of those bad advice things saying that as long as you pay something, they can't send you to collections. I assume that all her student loans are showing past due on her credit report, but I'll never know for sure.

I've heard about getting student loans "forgiven," but I don't know what the process is for that or how long it takes. In any case, I would have needed documentation of it to consider it with her loan application.
I don't think it works that way with federal student loans. You don't pay the amount due and don't get a forbearance, and you go into default. Period.

It gets reported on your credit report and stays there for 3 years after you get it cleared up. The Feds can take your tax refund, your pension, your wages, any income you have, INCLUDING Social Security and SSI. There are older parents paying off the loans of their dead kids with their Social Security because they are federally subsidized loans.

It sounds to me like SC just got Disability. That explains why she is expecting $5600 and why she doesn't have a lot of documentation yet. She probably just won her case and is waiting for her check, which can take awhile to come.

This woman is toxic. But if a predatory loan place gave her a loan you better believe they're going to get it back from her SSI.

This is what I was thinking, too. Except that she said she received her first regular monthly payment, and she didn't have documentation of that, either. Not even a check stub or an account statement where it was deposited. It struck me as more scatterbrained or disorganized than deceptive, though.

There is one I personally know of, but not sure if there are others. The one I know about is called Total and Permanent Disability (TPD). Takes a LOT to get it, and it is considered income .. so you also have to pay taxes on whatever was forgiven. There are a lot of rules also. The main one being, you have to get a doctor to declare you totally and permanently disabled. You have to be really really sick.

Here is a list of my symptoms and verified illnesses. First is Cirrhosis of the liver, which included : Throwing up blood on a regular basis, high Ammonia which is a lot like Dementia. Sometimes.. I may be someplace physically, but not there mentally. I've been bad enough that I did not recognize my own family. Diabetes, and Diabetic Neuropathy which causes extreme pain in my legs and is spreading to my hands.. sometimes I can't even walk. Also sometimes I need help getting dressed, standing, etc. There is others, but got a bit caught up and don't want to hijack the thread.
Engaged to the amazing Marmalady. She is my Silver Dragon, shining as bright as the sun. I her Black Dragon (though good honestly), dark as night..fierce and strong.
