That guy needs to go to the range to sight-in two rifles (a .270 and a .308) - and have both boxes of ammunition open at the same time. Both cartridges are derived from the .30-06, so the bases and the pre-neck case diameters are the same. .270 retains the full length, while .308 is a shortened case. As a result, a .308 will fit in a rifle chambered .270, since the shortened case means the "too big" portion of the neck and bullet will not be in the reduced-diameter part of the chamber. Read an article about someone doing this, and the results were NOT pretty. Highlight for explanation.Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

He can try finding a rifle for some reloaded ammo my dad had once: A 308/06. 30-06 case run through a .308 die, still full length. Kind of a long-necked goose looking thing, it was.Quoth wolfie View PostThat guy needs to go to the range to sight-in two rifles (a .270 and a .308) - and have both boxes of ammunition open at the same time...

I recall a "handyman's reference" multi-volume set published by the Britannica people back in the '80s (but appearing to have not been updated since the late '60s/early '70s). One article was about various cases based on the .30-06, and they described re-sizing 06 brass to fit. For shortened cases like the .308, they recommended rough-cutting the neck with a pipe cutter because doing it all with a case trimmer would take too long.Any fool can piss on the floor.
