My grandmother uses AOL as well still

I am not a grandmother (and probably won't be before I die .... but that's another story). I still use AOL. I have been a member for over 20 years, and frankly, most of my family wouldn't know how to reach me otherwise.

I'm tech-savvy, but my mother's generation is not (with one or two exceptions). I'm pushing 60, which means mom's group is in their 80s. While I thank the deities every day that so many of them are still alive, it is frustrating that they choose not to move on. On the other hand, I can understand it ... these are people that lived through the Great Depression and second World War. The fact that they are even willing to get online is amazing! One of my great aunts, age 96, even has a Facebook account - granted she doesn't post, but she checks it! If you think about all that generation has seen in almost a century, change is scary for them!

So, yeah, I'm a proud AOL user. In fact, I volunteered for AOL as a chat room host (remember those?) for 10 years!

True -- Just keep in mind that the number I gave was only for PAYING customers...not just folks who are using the web portal out of habit

My father. Then again, you have to look at what AOL has become. It is no longer a tool to access the internet. It is a news aggregation and an email service, all accessed via a web browser. Not much different than Yahoo.

You'd be surprised. Although it's typically older folks. I think the main reason is because AOL makes it very difficult to transition away. There's no way to export your contacts and if you have any more than a couple dozen it's very tedious to copy and paste them into another format. They just get so used to the layout of AOL it's like pulling teeth to get them to transition to something else.

I have seen an aol email address or 9 still in use. AFAIK it coulda been anything for an OS, after all that troubleshooting I would be surprised if the lady could have told 95 from 98.

I did have an older fellow come into the shop a year or so ago with a Windows 98 machine he was finally looking to upgrade because his AOL stopped working on it.

I'll bet he got annoyed when his machine was so old that it simply couldn't be upgraded...and he had no choice but to buy a new one. As for AOL, does anyone still use that?

Quoth me "Okay ma'am, please open your web browser and type (website address) in the taskbar at the top."

Quoth CX: "my browser is open, but there is noplace to type like my grandson showed me!"

Me: "Which browser are you using, Ma'am?"

CX: "Windows 95!" Me=headdesk

Got her browser open by telling her to open her email and I would send her a password reset link to get to the website with.

Cue 15 more minutes of explaining how to log in with temp password and reset a new one, to be met with "Cancel my membership, your product doesn't work as advertised. "
