It's bad enough when one of the Them pulls a stupid, but it is truly embarrassing when it is one of Us. Especialderpally when it's me!
The thing is, functional people tend to recognize when they've made a mistake, and start, you know, working on fixing the situation. If nothing else, we eventually remember the First Rule of Holes. The people who insist that if they keep digging they'll eventually come out in China, those are the ones who end up getting into real trouble.

A jury trial for a traffic case? That alone is noteworthy. I'd love to know more about this.
She probably thought that all she had to do was explain that the other driver was an asshole and didn't get out of her way and that's why she rammed him (or whatever she was charged with) and they'd be SURE to see her side.

Sometimes if I'm irritated I might shut a door a little too hard.

...That's the same as smashing an expensive phone because I'm being forced to pay a valid fine, right?

There is a certain kind of person who seems to believe that if they just make things bad enough, they'll create a badness singularity that collapses space-time in on itself and spits them out on the opposite side where everything is good....
I have patients who have had surgery on their dominant hand MULTIPLE times to repair bad fractures caused by punching inanimate objects like cement walls, pickup doors, etc. in fits of <drunken> frustration...

Well, if we try to keep her on a short leash...

Trial by jury for traffic offenses:
I have a friend who has gotten a few too many tickets over the years. His lawyer would pull this stunt. Lawyer would talk to the DA to negotiate reduced/dropped charges. DA would refuse as they have him dead to rights. Lawyer would throw up his hands and say "then we want a trial by jury." DA would start negotiating.

A trial by jury takes time and cost money.

I sense a little girl who found out early on that if she threw a big enough tantrum, she got her own way, and can't believe that it didn't work this time.

Poor impulse control. I'm thinking not only is that how she behaved in court, it was that sort of behavior that landed her in court in the first place.

I actually know how that could happen. She got an unfair ticket and ignored it. any letters she got about it threatening fines and penalties were thrown unopened into the trash. One day, she had to do something involving her license or car and was told that she couldn't because she had unpaid fines that needed to be resolved.

After throwing a fit there, she stormed down to the court office and demanded to have everything fixed because she was special and that ticket was unfair and she didn't get any letters. She demanded someone higher up, so told her that she could pay or she could get her day in court. Of course, she knew that if someone who had the power to fix things only heard about the unfairness of it all, she would be able to leave with no fines while flipping everyone off.

Then she went home and recreated with her friends who told her that she could demand a jury trial instead of sitting in front of a mean old judge who wouldn't care about her, just about the rules.

Of course, reasonable people hearing her story would understand and forgive her, so she demanded a jury trial.

Now, I have been a jurist and I have spoken to other people who have served. We all tend to go into the trial with an open mind. We are also people who understand that sometimes bad things happen to innocent people, so we listen and we pay attention to the case.

She would have had to been extremely special for the entire jury to decide to throw the book at her.

So her answer to getting a bill she does not want to pay is to create still another expensive bill that she will have to pay.

Boy, that is an expensive way to live life.
