  • unclear on check in time

It is 5am at the hotel I work at and a gentleman walks in and asks for a room. I let him know that if he checks in now he would have to be out by 11am. He wants to check out the next day so I let him know it would be a two night stay.

He is confused because he asks me the date and I agree it is the 22d but our normal check in time is not until 3pm - ten hours from now. We do have some leeway to allow early check ins but not 10 hours early. I quote him a discounted rate for the first night and the normal rate for the second night.

    He storms out angry.

    Huh

I understood you, what is his problem?

I'd bet he understood just fine; he just wanted OP to give him the first night.

Once upon a time I checked into a motel at 5 a.m. I had been looking for a vacant room since 11 p.m. Unfortunately it was Spring break week in Florida. I had no problem paying the full rate.

Ah, the benefits of Treating Staff Like They Should be Treatedâ„¢.

Staggered into our London hotel at 7 AM after about 20 hours of travel, including a 12-hour flight. Very politely greet Reception, explain our haggard look, and humbly say that we know check-in isn't until 3, but, oh, please, could we store our luggage until then, and is there a hotel restaurant where we can tank up on caffeine before we go off until check-in time?

"No problem, we can check you in now. Here's your key. Breakfast is still being served, so here's vouchers for today and for tomorrow morning. No extra charge. Enjoy your stay."

I had plenty of these "winners". It got to the point where I would just say "no, sold out" after audit because I was so tired of these idiots trying to argue. Even if it was a lie.

When I get to a hotel before checkin time, I always default to 'Can I store my luggage until check in'.

Just about every time the response is, 'Let me check to see if your room is available.' All but a handful of occasions they've checked me in straight away, and if they can't, they'd popped my luggage in my room when I come back later in the day to find out what my room number is.

At Disney World hotels, you can check in as soon as their computers switch over to the current day, which I think is at 6:00 am. Your room may not be ready, but you can store your luggage with Bell Services and then head off to the parks, and they'll text you with your room number when it's ready.

Went to Sydney years ago, There were four flights, 747s, that get in at 6:00 AM. Quantas & United, one each from LA & San Fran. So 1,000+ people hit Sydney at 6:00 AM. Several hundred of us are heading for the same hotel for a conference,

The hotel has several people checking everyone in. They check all the bags and later delivered them to your room. They then directed you to the Business lounge, where they have two "bathrooms" setup. You sign in. When your turn comes, you can have a shower and put on fresh closes (by this time, I had been traveling for 24 hours. Yea! Clean clothes!). When you are done, they clean up and the next person goes in.

Somewhere around 12:30 PM, I got my room. Bags were waiting.

Exactly what you expect out of a high end, business hotel. I can see why it was chosen for the conference.

Another note about about this hotel.
the first couple of nights that we were there, we saw a fireworks display being launched from Sydney Harbor. I asked about it at the front desk.

                  CC = Me
CC: Hi. I was curious about the fireworks display. Is there an event going on or a holiday that they are associated with?
DC: May I have your room #?
                  CC: 666
DC: Oh, Mr. CSquared. We ordered those specifically for you. Are you enjoying them?
                  CC: Ooooo. You are good!
DC: The fireworks are something that the City of Sydney does this time of year. No special event or holiday. Is there anything else that I can help you with?

He should have looked into the hotels that rent by the hour. I'd like to believe that an occasion such has this has come up more often than the obvious,

I get people like this all the time. They come in after midnight and because it's a new calendar date, they should get it until the next morning. I tell them that's not how it works and it's still [previous day] night. But it's [new date!] My newest trick is to glance out the window where it's still dark out and say that it's still night.
