The thing about Jerry Springer is, it may be theatrical, but IIRC (it's been a while) the show as a whole consistently supports liberal values -- tolerance, self-acceptance, loyalty, (and fidelity), apology and forgiveness.

Speaking of which, I recall reading somewhere that one of the few times Jerry Springer has ever walked off the show entirely was when some guy who talked about how he could make anyone a porn star said he could do so with children.

Mjr - The Prince is generally considered to be a heavily-political satire, so take that as you will ^_^ Sadly, some folks (who shall not be named because many of them are politicians) seem to think it's a user manual >_<

The Prince is not, and was not, satire. My understanding from college and since is that Machiavelli is "generally considered", to be the founder of utilitarianism as an actual political philosophy. As opposed to just calling it double-dealing, bloody-mindedness, and manipulation as a way of life.

I figure one reason Anton LaVey never got anywhere with his Church of Satan, was because he was pitching to the "common folk"... but as far as the ruling classes went, Machiavelli had already filled that slot. (And Robert Ringer had the translation for business people.)

Regarding the satire or not-satire of The Prince, that has been debated since its first publication. Including in a philosophy class in 1983 in which I and five others were injured in a fist fight, and three people arrested.

College was interesting. Small Midwestern college, I was an 'alternative' student (31 when I started, mostly night classes . . .)

Our teacher started it. I've always been a history buff, and challenged something she said about the Medici popes. Somebody else started in on how Machiavelli wrote The Prince to teach Lorenzo how to rule the world (or something like that). Someone else started the satire defense, and since the two of them hated each other (never did find out why, but it was a known fact), he was unpleasant about it. Called first guy a moron IIRC.

About half the class wound up taking sides; more about the two guys than about history at this point. I don't know who threw the first punch; teacher was yelling at ME . . . Must've been something in the water that night, or a full moon or something, 'cause it went OFF.

I got cold-cocked in the melee, no idea how I got out the classroom door; when I got my brain back I was sitting on the floor in the hall and my ear was bleeding. Other injuries, let's see, there were four black eyes, one broken wrist, one broken nose, one broken hand . . .

The cops showed up, the college chancellor showed up, an ambulance showed up, it was in the papers for three counties the next morning. The two idiots were expelled and I flunked that class . . .

Whatever else Machiavelli's responsible for, I'm pretty sure that's the only time The Prince ever sparked a college riot.
