The grocery stores around here sell reusable bags that stand up on their own fairly well. I remember at least one has a hook, and another has a cutout which I assume could be used to hook on the metal part of the checkout that holds plastic bags up.

Oh yeah, straws are going to be gone, at least from the city to the south of me. I'll admit to being a bit cranky about this (it hasn't come to my city yet, but it will) but even if I'm put out, I won't be cranky at any store level employee about it. I mean, I don't miss plastic grocery bags. I never used them for kitty litter, because they always had holes in them. But I'll miss plastic straws. I like them.

Some stores here are trying to phase out plastic straws; Green Siren Coffee has developed a lid that actually works for both hot and iced drinks, and the coffee bars at my store have transitioned to bamboo-fiber straws. Only marginally better than paper straws when it comes to durability; definitely not an option if you tend to 'savor' iced drinks. I've invested in a package of silicone straws for that purpose.

I'd say that people shopping into reusable bags does drive LP nuts; a local natural market has a big sign by the handbaskets "Take a basket; please do not shop into your bags". I wouldn't doubt that reusable bags--some people bring opaque rolling canvas things, with a frame so it's very hard to tell what's inside--were behind the most recent losses from Housewares (overall a couple thousand dollars worth of various very pricey things, the majority are fairly small and concealable but someone managed to walk off with a couple electric mixers and kettles).

Not sure if I should risk posting this, but back when I was a kid, we had candy that popped in your mouth. Not sure if Pop Rocks are still around, but they also would stick to a cat's fur if licked first and kitty is sleeping. The first thing a sleeping cat does when waking is a quick groom. While they are grooming, they will use their mouth to pull things that are stuck to their fur off. Into their mouth. Then they run around in a most entertaining fashion until they are tired or their mouth stops popping and give them selves a quick bath...

As I recall, I was grounded for a month after I put 5 on my mom's snotty cat.

Those plastic grocery bags are exactly the right size to line wastebasket that holds the used kitty litter. I would have to buy bags for that purpose if I didn't have a few around. I don't collect them, but housemate does. Really, after I'd remembered the reusable ones four or five times, it became a habit.

I have to say, from the cashier's point of view many bags are not as easy to set up and fill. I have a couple that are strong, but not stiff, so they don't stay upright and open. The plastic coated paper fiber ones tend to close along their pre-creased lines. My best heavy canvas one sets off the warning sensor at the self checkout even after I press the "i brought my own bag" button. On the whole, though the fewer bags I have to tote into the house and throw away, the better.

I do wonder, any place other than a grocery store, if walking in with you own reusable bag makes Loss prevention folks crazy.

I once had a yearling bull calf get out of the pasture and into my parts yard. He stuck his head through an old worn out 15-inch truck tire. An hour to catch him and then another two hours to cut the tire off. I have pictures somewhere it was quite funny.

And then there's me. I have and use my washable bags ALL the time. Except at Trader Joe's. I always have to buy a paper bag there because they are thick, crinkly brown paper bags that my cats just love.

This always causes questions "Mam, you have plenty of bags and I will have to charge you if you take a paper bag." Once I explain that my cat's love the bags, they usually dig around and find a bag with a handle pulled off they can give me for free, because they know that if I am giving them to the cats as a toy, I will pull the handles off before the cats get them.

Only 50 cents for a toy my cats will use for at least a week before the crinkly newness wears off? Such a deal!!!

Edited to mention that I do have uses for plastic shopping bags, but I get them free at the local St Vincent's thrift store. Warning, if you go to a place that takes donations and ask for plastic bags, you will end up with enough stuffed in your car to last a nuclear winter.

New Zealand is in the process of phasing out both Plastic bags and plastic straws - a number of supermarkets have already phased them out and are selling cloth reusable bags for $1 each (with one supermarket chain having it so that when you wear the bag out, you can get it replaced for free), other supermarkets hoping to have them banned by the end of October (they supposedly want a full ban in effect by the beginning of 2019)

I have a whole car full of reusable bags. They're everywhere these days, passed out free by the dozen at fairs. About once a year I go through the pile and give away at least half of them.
BUT.....I also have 4 little garbage cans at home that fit cheap plastic grocery bags perfectly. They were bought for that very reason, so any plastic bags that come home with me get used. It just doesn't make sense to me, to get rid of all plastic grocery bags, so I'll have to BUY small plastic bags to line my garbage cans. When I start to run low on bags, I put out a plea on Freecycle, and usually get enough bags to keep me going for another year or two, proving once again that One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure.

I'm not looking forward to the inevitable day when our town outlaws plastic bags. 95% of the time, when a customer requests their items to be double-bagged, and I point them towards the plastic bags we have at every register that are three times thicker (and that cost all of ten cents), they balk.

A few years ago, before This Town got the bag law, I went to the Big Science Museum in the Big City Nearby (which had a bag law before we did). There was an exhibit featuring the stomach contents of a whale that had beached itself and died. There must've been dozens of plastic bags in the mess, and quite a few of them had the Store's logo on it.

So I support the bag law, because I feel kinda guilty that my company helped kill that whale.

I make reusable bags as well. (I've actually sold a couple to people behind me in line at the store. That was a trip!) Washable, recycled upholstery samples, recycled denim for the lining, they even work as hot/cold thermal bags.

The only thing the little plastic bags are good for is used cat litter . . .
