Saturday is Harry Potter Day

I am SO dreading Saturday, especially since I work in a library and there is like, NO way we'll have any of the books ready to go by then. We haven't even received our copies, yet, and so far there's been no email from our Cataloging Department on Oahu to let us know that they're on the way. Last time, most people bought their own copy, neglected to cancel their request, and ended up paying $1.00 for each copy that wasn't picked up on time. *sigh*

I can't wait to actually read the book, though, but I always have to wait for my copy, since I order it from amazon.uk and the shipping takes forever.

So, who out there is dreading Saturday (or late Friday night)?

Ah, Saturday; probably now my favourite day of the week. Don't have to work (and am, for once, glad I don't work in a book store) and can forget all about Harry and his ilk while I fight off Great Wyrm Gold Dragons in a game of Dungeons & Dragons (unless we go through with the Naruto-style campaign.. ah, gotta make NPCs!)

Which now makes me wonder about the possibility of generating an SC as a wandering monster. Lessee...

Str: Varies. 5 to 18
Dex: Varies. 5 to 18
Int: Varies. 5 to 18.
Wis: <7 (finally, we identify their weak spot!)
Con: Varies. 5 to 18.
Cha: <10

The SC looks like most anybody else, but has two noticeable below average traits: Wisdom is unusually low, as is Charisma, which leads to situations wherein the SC creates a problem for themselves, and is then unable to correct it, resorting to the only tactic remaining: going sucky. This can take many forms, from whining, crying, becoming belligerent, physical violence, etc, but usually takes the form of their most devastating ability: Summon Manager.

Once per scene, the SC can summon the manager of the PC. In the case of Paladins, for instance, the paladin's own deity is forced to arrive on the scene and deal with the SC. If this is repeated often enough, sooner or later, the paladin is likely to be looked at in a new light by his deity, and could even lose paladinhood (i.e.: get fired) due to too many SC's constantly distracting the deity.

So, what do you all think? Good, bad, needs improvement?

I'm thinking depending on how the paladin's role goes instead of getting fired the diety gets pissed off and smites the SC. Some dieties are touchy.

This is the first time that I have both Friday night and all of Saturday to myself. Every HP before now I've either been working or had to hang out with the boyfriend's family - and usually ended up being spoiled by a) some wanker who decided to yell the ending, b) idiotic news coverage, or c) someone I was hanging around with just happening to mention, "Ooh, Dumbledore dies, doesn't he?"

This time, I'm picking up my book, going straight home and not talking to anyone for at least 36 hours.

Ah, but you've got to put on a check to see if the Manager has a Spine. If the SC succeeds, the Manager does whatever the SC wants. If it fails the Spine roll, the Manager turns on them. A Critical Failure results in... well... in the Paladin's case it would likely result in a couple blasted cities and a pillar of salt.

I work on Friday night I had plans to dress up and go to our town's huge party, but no dice...didn't really have much choice in the matter (ie, I was blindsided yesterday).

Hope the owner realizes that no way in Hades is any ebay work going to get done, unless he lets me hide in the office. There's hope though in that most of our preorders seem to be from adults so that could be some mild bit of sanity restored.

As a gamer, this amused me greatly.
Though you put their INT a wee bit too high for my liking. I'd place most at an average 10-11 at best. If their INT was anywhere NEAR 18, they'd be able to READ signs, COMPREHEND logic, and GRASP the concept of store/corporate policies. I don't think WIS covers any of those things (though the <7 definitely resonates as TRUE!)

But that may just be me.

A friend of mine was working on an RPG d20 game based on retail at a mall at one point... I should call her and see how that's going...

I ordered mine on Amazon.com months ago, and it is supposed to arrive at my house on Saturday. I've really had no problems getting them on time, and it certainly beats the crowds at the local bookstores.

I loved it one time when I saw an old fogie raising hell with the clerk at Barnes & Noble, yelling at her that he didn't care if they wouldn't release the book for three more days. He knew they had copies of it in the back and all she had to do was go back and get him one. It was quite a scene with this poor lady telling him over and over that they did not have them, and even if they did, they were not allowed to sell them until the actual release date. It was a surprise he didn't die right there from a heart attack, all over a book.

The library situation...

I vaguely remember reading in Library Journal (can't recall the month) that public library systems and large public libraries would receive copies on Friday July 20th so that they could be cataloged and ready to circulate on Satruday July 21st. I just peeked at OCLC's Worldcat, and 333 libraries have their holdings attached to the catalog record. Methinks they've all done so to "quick cat" once they have their copies in hand. If your cataloging dept. gets your copies on Friday or Saturday, they *should* be ready to circulate in pretty short order.
Part of the price library patrons pay to get best sellers for free is that they have to WAIT to get 'em. (Good for you for charging a nominal fee for your reserve service, AND insisting on collecting it when patrons fail to pick up their books in a timely manner!)

Well, here's the sucky part of living in Hawaii and working in the library system. All items ordered as a whole for every branch (bestselling books/DVDs) go to our Cataloging section on Oahu and then they're mailed to us outer islands (hopefully in a timely manner), so we hardly ever get anything ready to circ on its street date, DVDs included. Most people understand this, but I know I'm going to hear, "You're ruining my kid's life -- I promised him that book! You're supposed to have it TODAY!"

Yeah, I remember when they first implemented the $1.00 charge for not picking up books that are requested. Hell, we give em 14+ days to pick them up and if they don't want them, all they have to do is either call and cancel them, or cancel the requests themselves online. Just plain laziness, and then they don't think they should have to pay it. I can't even count how many times I hear, "I never got the notice in the mail!" Yeah, right, but hello ... you know you requested it! Just call the library ... geez!

I have been reading Harry Potter since the VERY beginning. I was ten years old when I read the first book, I am twenty now, so Harry Potter has been with me for half my life. I actually remember the very day I got the first one. We were doing book reports, and I couldn't think of anything to read. My English teacher pulled me aside and said "You HAVE to read this one" I had never heard of Harry Potter, not many people had. My copy of the first book has Dumbledore with a BROWN beard on it for some reason, when all the other ones are silver.

So I am really looking forward to this weekend, I have to find out how it ends. I am going to a midnight opening, but I feel SO sorry for the poor people that will be working there. No doubt there will be tired parents dragging their extremelly tired children to the shops at that time, oh yes, there will be tears.
