Why do SC's instantly lose their hearing only when don't hear what they want to?

  • Why do SC's instantly lose their hearing only when don't hear what they want to?

I've noticed over the years many SC's seem to instantly go deaf whenever you don't tell them what they want to hear, or whenever you give them "shocking" information.

When I was a toll operator for Bellsouth, one of the things we dealt with each day were customers on pay phones. Many pay phones out there looked like Bellsouth's pay phones, but were privately owned. We could help a customer make calls, but we could not take money or issue refunds for lost coins. Any time I told a customer this, the response was always "Huh? Excuse me?" as if they couldn't hear me the first time.

Or, later on in customer service and repair service, whenever you gave them the earliest committment date, which normally was not the same day like they wanted, it was "What? What did you say?" They heard me, but it wasn't the answer they wanted to hear.

It doesn't just end with call centers. I have seen this first hand in grocery stores and department stores whenever a customer was trying to scam the cashier into getting a discount. Coupons always come to mind on this one. "What? Did you say I can't use my $5 off Doritos for my Planter's peanuts?"

I know what you mean. It's almost as stupid as the "What do you mean, [repeats what the employee just told them]?!"

"What do you mean, I can't get a refund without a receipt?!" Gee, I didn't know there was more than one meaning to that sentence.

Some SCs like to say or do stupid things to try to irritate the employee into giving them what they want.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

There must be ear plugs/hearing aids made by the same people who make Peril Sensitive Sunglasses. Basically any time somebody says something that would be unpleasant to the listener, they activate and block out all sound.

These are usually the same people who lose their vision once they encounter a perceived problem, as well.

E.g., a customer comes in, you complete a transaction seemingly to their satisfaction. Fast forward an hour/day/week when they return, and the aforementioned customer storms in to tell you all about how the last person who served them cheated them, lied to them, or otherwise shit in their cereal, so to speak. They are totally oblivious during the whole discourse that you are, in fact, the person they are complaining about (while fabricating most aspects of the original transaction-if not the whole thing).

It's almost worth having to deal with the SC just to see the look on their face when you point out that you were the person that served them.
