The whole point about the first Clerks film is that it's not just about ragging on customers (although that's the best bit). The underlying themes are of personal responsibility and temptation - work ethic so strong you come in on your day off versus a friend with no work ethic whatsoever. There are themes of friendship intertwined in there - which is more important, your friend or your work?
