Sorry, I have a few silver dollars myself. But I didn't spend them, I kept them, as I am a collector of everyday coins from other countries.

Every few years I take a small jar of silver quarters to a coin dealer. I've gotten to the point where I can hear a single silver coin rattling around with a bucket of standard stuff.

Legally speaking, I could spend a Trade Dollar because the USA hasn't "demonitized" it yet.

Acceptance by the receiver is another matter entirely.

I'm in Australia too, but the car washes in my area take $1 or $2 coins. No tokens.

No worries, I didn't have anything in the location on my profile and there are so many Americans online that it's usually safe to bet any random person is American.

Keep an eye out for any round 50 cent coins... they contained 50 cents worth of silver at the time they were made (worth around $3 last time I checked, which was a couple of years ago).

We'll exclude that.>> Now that banks can do electronic transfers, those bills (above the $2 bill, of course ) are no longer in use, and were never meant for circulation. They existed for the sole purpose of money transfers between large financial institutions. They may even have been illeagle for a private individual to own, depending on the time period.

Hello everyone. I've been reading these forums on and off for quite some time now, but have only just become a member - this is my first post. I graduated from university earlier this year, and worked several retail/sales/customer service jobs during that time and beyond. Oh, and I am also in Australia.

With this talk about cash, something that's always annoyed me is people using $100 notes, and not just from a retail perspective. As far as I know, our ATMs only give cash in $20s or $50s, so the only real way to get $100s is to actually go into the bank branch and make an over-the-counter withdrawal. 2 times 50 is 100, so, unless you're filling a briefcase with cash, why would you bother?

Or is this just me?

A woman at work had $50s as her only cash the other day. I asked her why. She had no good reason.

I actually have 2 $50 on my desk right now. (I won't carry them on me) My excuse is that my boss gave them to me for my birthday. They go into the bank account tomorrow.

I only ever have large bills on me when I'm going to make a large purchase that I can't use my card for.

I got a round 50 cent coin today. The customer wasn't sure if it was legal tender, but I accepted it anyway. Then swapped it for a regular (Australian) 50 cent coin.

I LIKE having $100 bills. (Not always, though...) I have my checks direct deposited, and every few weeks I withdraw a few hundred dollars so I have cash. Having a wad of twenties can be a pain.

But then, I don't use a $100 bill for a purchase under $50.
