I'm pretty sure that most of the gas station cards here in Canada are co-branded, so you can use them anywhere that accepts Visa/Mastercard. Actually, a lot of store cards are co-branded too, with the exception of the major department store cards like Sears.

On a related note, my store is often confused with our major competitor, which gives air miles. I'm always being handed people's air miles cards. Some get pissed off/confused when I tell them that our store doesn't give them.
