  • Get a grip and get a life, madam

I don't often get unreasonable customers but I got one today. I'm a grocery store cashier and our store has a rewards program. You can use either a plastic card or the store's credit card or a cellphone app.
But you CAN NOT scan more than once on any transaction. This is important.

Unreasonable Customer wants to scan her credit card for her points. I do so.
Then I tally up all her groceries.
Now ... she wants to scan her cellphone app to actually use the points on THAT.

    Me: "Ma'am, I can't do that."
    UC: "EXCUSE me?"
Me: "I cannot scan two cards on one transaction."
    She stares at me.
    UC: "And why not?"
Me: "The system literally won't allow it."
    UC: "It's been done before."

No, no it hasn't. Because the system literally won't allow it.

Finally I tell her to hold up her phone. She does and I scan it. The machine says "Card already scanned."

    I stare at her.

UC: "WELL. I have NEVER heard of this before."

Me (thinks): "Well, you're hearing it now."

She quibbled a bit more while the three or four people behind her started to shift restlessly. I don't know if she was expecting me to fold, or somehow find a work-around, or what, but I am way too old to be intimidated by this nonsense. I finally took to just repeating myself ("You can NOT scan more than one card in any one transaction") while staring at her.

Finally she paid and walked out, quite miffed.

    Real life is HARD.

She got tetchy because she...tried to do the thing she already did? Some people shouldn't be unsupervised.
    Cheap, fast, good. Pick two.
They want us to read minds, I want read/write.
