Short but still annoying.
Grocery store where I work no longer has baskets. They have small buggies and giant buggies. No baskets.
Whiny Customer: "Why don't you have baskets anymore?"
Me: "People steal them, sir."
WC: "What! Why is it that downtown where there are more criminals the stores have baskets?!?"
Me: " ..."
What I *wanted* to say was "How the hell should I know? Go ask the fucking criminals!" But there were customers behind him.
I suggested he contact corporate. That got the usual "Pfft" making it clear that this was far too much trouble. Thankfully he left shortly thereafter.
Seriously, use a small buggy if you're not buying much. I do. I'm buying a carton of milk and a loaf of bread ... I grab a small buggy.
Later I asked the store manager about this, just to make sure I was giving the correct explanation. I was. He said one time he was helping out with the pickup option (order online and come get it) and the customer opened their trunk and ... there were four or five baskets in there.
Granted it's possible they weren't all (or any of 'em) ours but clearly they had been taken from *some* store.
