  • Customer throws gasoline on a CW

(BG: We have a gas station attached to the store; while it is technically on store property it's separated from the parking lot by a wall. The only way for anyone over there to contact anyone in the store is by calling and hoping a manager picks up the phone))

I was told by a coworker that the closer at the gas station (K) got into an altercation with a customer on...it had to have happened Saturday after I left, because I saw K earlier that afternoon when she came on shift.

D told me that a guy at the gas station was dispensing gas into an unapproved container (probably a gallon water jug, I've witnessed that myself). K stepped out of the booth to tell him he couldn't do that (it's not clear if she warned him through the speaker first). The guy threw gas on her...D said that K "threw it back" (probably the empty container, K can be a bit of a hothead but I can't see her doing anything other than defending herself).

Police, ambulance and the fire department were called, it's not clear who called them or if the guy and his buddy got arrested, but not only did K press assault charges on him, he also pressed charges on her.

D told me that none of the managers lifted a finger until they "discovered" the cops had been called. K is suspended pending the investigation. Luckily there is prolific camera coverage of the gas station and all the pumps...I'd kinda like to see that video myself.

I've always been very leery of women working over there alone; there's no easy way to contact the store if something goes wrong.

F that noise. Also, I wish I had "throwing gas away" money!

K met with management and the union rep a few days ago; I wasn't really able to talk to her afterwards, but the suspension has gone to "stage 2", meaning HR gets involved. Another CW told me that K did have bruises when she went to the hospital...I'm really hoping that was documented.

This is the only job that K has had (she's been here about 14 years, she started in the store); I like her a lot but wouldn't blame her in the least if she quit (and then sued the guy who attacked her). This made it painfully clear to all of us that management does nothing in altercations, even with video evidence (the very fact that the guy threw gas on her should in itself be reason to back an employee filing criminal charges against him).

It also came to light that dudebro and his buddy were both black, K is white. Which is relevant around here; the company is so afraid of being accused of 'profiling' that they will generally tell us to 'ignore' shoplifters and there have been a few instances where an instigator has been not only ignored, but defended.
