If you think its too cold or hot for you to get out and pump your own gas at another station so you come and let us pump it for you I dont think giving the person an extra $1 or so is a bad thing.

I really hate the people that come in when its below freezing and the wind is really blowing to where my hands and face go numb and they wont even open the darn window to tell you what they want. They just hold a bill up to the window and then when you are done pumping they just crack the window enough to slip the money out.

When people do that they can expect a little bit of gas to miss the tank and run down the side of their car.

That sounds like pretty over the top retaliation for minor rudeness. They are choosing the station that pumps their gas for them for convenience; it is rude but not horribly so to take maximum advantage of that convenience by refusing to roll the window down.

Well I'm realising the difference between England and America even more now. I never tip delivery drivers unless there is an awkward amount of change, its just never been appropriate.

In England its expected that you tip anywhere where you get sit down service (you sit at a table and get served) and at posh bars but otherwise tips don't really happen. <Edit> Oh, and cab drivers, we tip cab drivers here </edit>

I'm from the UK as well and I've always tipped delivery drivers, Generally they're getting wet, sweaty or freezing important bits off to cover for my laziness

As for cabbies, if you use them a lot, then yeah. When I used to work 15 miles from home and travel by bus then 2 mile walk home, popping into the pub on the way home on the weekends was not unknown. Thanks to good tipping previously I could stagger into the back of the cab mumble "hzzzmmmrrrrrr", "Home then?", "Yeeerrrppp!"

As far as I know, in Aussie the price you see is the price you pay (you lucky duck!). Whereas here in the States, you not only have the price of the item, but the price of that nasty little thing called TAXES which is different for every state and every item (Food Taxes and Merchandice Taxes).

We pay GST (Goods and Services Tax) on just about everything (some essential items are GST free) however, the price displayed must include GST. And GST is easy to calculate its a flat 10%.

The pizza shops around here have added a $1.50 or more "delivery" charge to every order. We use to tip them $2 or more but since they added that fee to "cover gas" most of the guys refuse to tip, saying they are already getting the delivery charge.

Let me tell you about those "delivery charges". Our store charges $1.50 for a delivery charge now, we only get roughly 1/2 of that. The rest goes straight to corporate. That is something the higher-ups do not want the average person to know for some reason.

Donruss, if you are getting half of the delivery charge, consider yourself lucky. Most places do not pass ANY of that charge on to the drivers, and as VenomX has indirectly indicated, the delivery charge is actually hurting the delivery people. Several places are indeed putting drivers at "tipped wages" now, as they are expected to be receiving tips, but the mistaken belief that the drivers are getting the delivery charge is really hurting their take-home wages.

I still consider you lucky to see up front what you're paying (differing states have different taxes and for some reason I've had several customers ask me what the other states taxes were....uhm, I don't know?), because sometimes it's a nasty surprise to see a higher tax than what you were expecting. I've seriously had a couple people refuse to pay because it was higher than they were used to (Sorry, Mizz Florida-Teacher, but no matter what you say about Florida not having Taxes on food you STILL have to pay taxes on those chocolate bars you want so badly).

With me, if i have something delivered; I tip them whatever a gallon of gas is. I have started only tipping, if the waiter/waitress done one hell of a good job. Or if I am generous. Because I have learned that they still get paid minimum wage no matter what. And plus, I am trying to save money and I just can't be spending it all. Don't even try to lecture me, I will still not listen.

We have a lot of people that will hold up a $20 and when you are done putting $20 in their tank and go to collect they try the old "I only wanted $5" deal. Or they hold up the $20 and you pump $20 and they then tell you "oh I wanted 91 oct not 87 oct".

Then you have the guy that came in today, the new worker was outside by himself, customer jumps out while my co-worker is busy with 3 other cars and yells "put $10 in" and comes inside to get cigarettes. When he goes outside he sees my co-worker had out the gas into his trucks read tank, which doesnt work anymore. He came in complaining and asked the boss if he still had to pay because his employee screwed up.

My boss asked if he had told him to put it in the front tank and the guy admitted he didnt and that everyone should know that his back tank doesnt work. Boss told him we cant read minds and yes he had to pay for it still.

Not really violence or vandalism... if they are in such a rush to get the gas I wait until their amount hits on the pump and stop the gas and pull the nozzle out to hang up.

Not sure why but these new pumps will leak gas a few seconds after you stop them. So I usually either leave them in the car for a few seconds or shake or tap them when I pull it out. If they seem to be in a hurry by not having the time to open the car door or window to talk to me then I just grab it when done and sometimes it drips. Yes I could grab a paper towel and wipe it off but they are in a hurry remember...

Heck they sometimes run off without their gas caps or the gas door closed. The caps sit on top of the pumps for 48 hours then we get rid of them in a fun way. No we dont destory them but if you really wanted it you would need a taaaaaallll ladder.

Personally, I don't think the OP was sucky. There was no reciept, and it was tacky of the delivery person to complain in earshot of the OP's coworker. Plus, even though a dollar doesn't buy much these days, it's better than nothing, especially on a $6.50 order that probably used a fraction of a gallon of gas to deliver.

Myself, I'm torn on the whole tipping on deliveries thing...I mean, I know I had a roomie who was a delivery driver in college, so I do always tip, unless something goes really, horribly wrong or the delivery person is very rude to me, but I'm often confused as too how much I really want to tip.

For example, what with those darned delivery fees, I'm never sure how much is actually going to the driver, as different places do it differently. And on top of that, I'm never at all sure if the drivers are making non-tip minimum wage, or tip minimum wage, or some other figure per hour. Add in the fact that unlike a small restaurant bill (i.e. I sat at Denny's for 4 hours but only had a $7 bill) I haven't wasted hours of their time, so I'm less likely to tip the amount of the bill. In the end though, I realize that I'm paying for the convenience of my food being brought to me, as opposed to me having to go get it, so I do try to keep that in mind.

Also, I do tend to tip based on the distance, difficulty, order size and delivery time. When I get a small order delivered to my apartment from the pizza place across the street, who are always timely and polite, I tip 20-25%, which is usually around $4. When I order Jimmy John's to my work address, and they're either late/I have to call to redeliver/they show up at the wrong door and I spend half an hour in the lobby waiting, I cut them a break because the campus can be mildly confusing, but I usually only tip $1-2. If the JJ's person is speedy, gets here when they say they will and is polite, I'll tip the $3.50 leftover from my $10 bill.

Another "Was I sucky?" story:

In Ontario, there's no provincial tax (8%) on meals under $4. Wendy's (fast food) has a few "junior combos" (small meat item, one side, drink) at $3.99 each. On occasion, I'll get 2 of their nugget junior combos, subbing a Frosty (chocolate malt) for the drink on one - 10 nuggets, baked potato, salad, drink and dessert. The "possibly sucky" part is that I order one, and when they ask "do you want anything else?", I tell them "not on this receipt", they ring it in, I pay, then I order the second.

Is it sucky to make 2 separate purchases in order to save 64 cents?
