I was ringing people out in the Bath department on a busy sale day, a lady about 4 people back starts to yell "ISN'T THERE ANOTHER REGISTER OPEN" (bear in mind, this is a major department store, with registers in every department, it's the middle of a weekday). So I simply say "oh yes, of course there is" and she's like "WHERE????" so I go on to name all the departments on the first floor for her! meanwhile thinking to myself, yeah, I'm the only one in the whole store who is working today.

Oh my DOG, I hate that. Of course, in a grocery store there are no other lanes open. "Why aren't there more lanes open?" makes me want to kill!!! How about because there are no other cashiers? How about because there's a cashier on break? How about you don't go shopping at 5pm on a weeknight if you don't want to wait in line?

I worked in a one line - several registers setup...

<whine> "Isn't there anyone else to help?" (often after I have already paged at least once or twice for help, which sometimes I just did for show because I knew I wasn't likely to get anyone up there to help me)

<perfectly polite and helpful> Well, if you'd like, you can go back to the music department and pay there.

Oddly enough, they almost never took me up on that offer...
