Some people really say 'aboot'?

I have never known anyone to say "aboot" and I have lived in Canada all my life.

Yes, the people I know pronounce that word, and pretty much any "ou" word a little differently, but it's less of an "oo" sound and more of stronger "ew" sound.

"Aboot" is more a Maritime thing. As is "eh", really. Though you hear it in the prairies here and there too. The Maritimes has a language onto itself. ( The English to Miramichi dictionary comes to mind ) Its almost like Australian in some ways. ( "Good day" is one word for example: g'day! )

Yeah, that sounds about right from what I've heard. Where Americans usually say out as "aa-uu-tt", Canadians say it a little more "aa-ew-tt".

BTW, around Cincinnati, we also pronounce mountain "mountin" (actually more like "moun'in") and Clinton "Clintin".

eeeehhhhhhh ..... I just call it Too-Lee and leave it at that. Tooele is a town in Utah with overpriced real estate and the constant threat of a cloud of deadly biological agents washing over the entire town from the Dugway Proving Grounds (which is one valley over and is where they burn off the USA's Chemical weapons stockpile)

I say "eh" all the time. I can't control it. If my sentence has a period, its got an "eh" before it.

I work with a woman who ends every sentence with "eh?" said like a question, of course.

Kind of drives me nuts to listen to her, because she also has an annoying voice and a 'twang' that makes her come across sounding really simple.
She's a nice lady, but I try to steer clear of long conversations.

Every year, a group of Canadian gamers known as "The Red Shirts" come down to Origins and Gen Con. They have some fun games, and I spend a fair amount of time in their area. I'm even on their website, along with some of the minis a friend of mine painted. They say "eh?" alot, and have been know to slip out the occasional "aboot," but Its not that big of a deal. Too busy burning down another Space Marine with my Ratz to notice accents.

I find that I do use eh? as a question word. And usually when asking rhetorical questions. I had a teacher that used eh instead of um when talking aloud. Kind of amusing at first but you tune it out after a while just like you tune out um.

Lesse, I do "eh" a fair bit, though it's random. Also usually only in casual conversation, though it has slipped in other places occassionally.

I can understand a Newfie accent fairly well, having had the opportunity to listen to softer versions of it growing up, and my High school band teacher could slip into a full-blown one any time he wanted.

And as for differences between Canada and the US, I find usually on the small things, day to day living, we're fairly similar. It's only on the larger issues you start to find more pervasive trends.

You should try living in Utah we have our own way of pronouncing words like Tooele, pronounced Two-will-a, or Hurricane, pronounced Her-i-can. And there are things like mountain, pronounced mountin, clinton, pronounced clintin.

Those are just to name a few.
