I think they're referring to a method where you grab it with your thumb and one finger, it puts hella backspin on the ball and works really well when done right (I could be wrong about how it's done, but it's not the usual 3-fingered stance)

My brother used to like to goof off with the lighter balls after we were done with a tournament but the lane was still running, or after we were done with a league, what have you.

He'd take one of the kiddie balls, put the tips of his middle fingers in the finger holes and just let the ball rest in his palm. He'd start at the approach to the left of the lane he was in. He had a wicked curve normally, so when he did this, the ball would go about halfway down the lane before it slowed enough to catch, if it didn't drop into the right gutter, and would sometimes be going too slow to make it to the pins before curving all the way back over to the left gutter.
