Banks are CHARGING to make change? Incredible. What's next? Going to have to pay them for the oxygen you use while waiting in their bloody lines?
All the banks in this town charge for it unless you have an account with that bank.

There is a bank right next door to us, the owner doesn't do his banking there. But, he allows any employee of that bank to get free sodas out of our soda fountain, so we get all our change from them for free.

One Saturday I go in to open up the store, and we have no rolled coins and hardly any 1s. This is unfortunate, since the bank next door isn't open at all on the weekends, the manager is typically supposed to get a supply of rolled coins and small bills for the weekend on Friday.

Luckily the bank I do business at is only two blocks away, it did mean I had to lock the store for 15 minutes to go get change once the bank opened, though.

My manager told me his policy is generally, "official policy is we don't make change for anyone unless they're buying something." He says he does this primarily because he used to get a lot of scam-artists in trying to steal. However, at our discretion we can make change for a customer, but if we get duped and short the drawer, it's on us.

Banks and Airlines charge for EVERYTHING these days.

You can thank your fellow customers for that.

Rule of life : Any time that a business provides any goods or services for free, there will ALWAYS be at least a few people who will abuse the privilege.

Sooner or later, the business will realize how much abuse is going on, and they will start charging to rein it in.

That's life. There will always be a few people who will spoil a good thing for everybody.

I've been to a few banks that won't give you change if you're not a member.

That's a double edged sword. If they find out that you are lying, that might set them off far more. I don't know about anyone else, but nothing else pisses me off more than lying to my face.

I have occasionally asked for changed, but only when I am a customer and not for anything outrageous. I have yet to be told no.

Yeah, where I work, we're actually required to give change. On my first day the manager told me specifically.
"You're gonna make a lot of change for people, we're pretty much a bank."

Maybe she meant she was "out of quarters to give away". At any rate, I've often found that a little white lie to customers can get them out of your face a lot more quickly and easily. If the majority of the time you tell them policy and they want to argue with you about it, simply telling them you're out can cut out that same old argument.

At times yes, but I always take the honesty approach. If I can't do something, I can't do it, and that's exactly what I tell them. If they want to argue, my manager is standing right there... and they'll just tell you the same thing.

    Well, unless it's the night-time manager working, and you're a cute girl... he's such a horn-dog. It's great!

Wish I could have stuck around for that conversation.
Me, too. That would've been fun to hear, I'm sure.

Yes but the girl said she didn't HAVE any, not that she couldn't GIVE him any.

BIG difference... by saying she didn't HAVE any, she lied to him, he has a right to be miffed.

Now if she had just said "I'm sorry, but I can't give them out, we go through a lot of quarters." I'm sure there wouldn't have been a problem.

That's a bit harsh, especially since he explained the situation rather well.

Yeah sure, sometimes places can't, or won't do something, but it never hurts to ASK. Sometimes, asking nicely is all it takes.

It'd be harsh if the behavior wasn't totally out of line. Asking and demanding are two entirely different things. Re-read the post. It's dripping with entitlement. How does the poster know how many quarters the service desk uses a day? Or how many requests for rolls of quarters does the service desk get a day? The poster is presuming to know this information.

There are threads from customer service folks posted on this site everyday, complaining about this type of behavior from customers or actually non-customers. And everyday people rail in support of the customer service persons indignation. But, when a poster posts about their acting in the same manner, people are supposed to look away because this person works in customer service?

Sorry. If it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, it's usually a duck.

I think she's more confused about why you expect your grocery store to act as your personal bank.

I've had problems with this same girl at the desk before. Even when trying to break a 20 into a 10 and two 5's. I wonder if she thinks I'm some kind of scammer or something? Although exchanging a 10 for a roll of quarters isn't the world's brightest scam...

Maybe it's just me, but that's one thing i don't understand. If you're out at a store, you're already away from home, you could drive your butt to a bank to get the quarters!

I dunno, I think I expect too much from people
Well, you can't always go to the bank for change, due to the bank being closed. We save our change during the week, and that often gives us enough quarters to do our laundry on the weekends. However, this weekend we had quite a bit more than usual due to some new clothes and changing the bedding from winter to summer blankets. And we did laundry on Sunday, so I couldn't go to the bank to get quarters.

The laundromat's change machines were both empty, too. So, I had to head over to the grocery store in the plaza. The girl at the service desk told me she couldn't sell me quarters because she was out of them - despite the two rolls I could clearly see in her drawer. I don't like when people lie to my face. I wound up getting quarters from one of the supervisors, C, who I worked with for a total of 7 years, between the grocery store and another company. C asked me why I didn't get any quarters at the service desk. I told her the girl at the desk was out of quarters and left as C headed to the service desk with some extra rolls of quarters. Wish I could have stuck around for that conversation.
