Bananas are grown in tropical climates

My grandmother manages to grow a few pineapples, every now and then.

Mum (a mild horticulturist if I ever met one) knows some people up in New York State that grows and produces bananas for their friends and family. All you need is to keep the soil warm.

And plenty moist. Heck, you can grow Lady Fingers (Sugar Bananas) indoors.

Perhaps a very large greenhouse with a misting system? Hmm, wonder if that would work here in Oregon?

There used to be a small banana farm on the coast between Ventura and Santa Barbara that produced several kinds of bananas. Apparently they had the perfect microclimate for them. I believe they're no longer in business.

Correct, the La Conchita Banana Plantation was closed down in 1996. And if I remember correctly it was over 10 acres in size.

It was about 10-20 miles or so from Ventura (where I grew up and still have my shop).

Well, Costa Rica is America....technically. You know, Latin America or Central America....

If you are willing to go that far, then Mexico is part of America too. It's actually in North America, just like the US>

But since the customer wasn't satisfied with bananas from Mexico, I doubt Costa Rica counts as an improvement.

America is a pretty diverse place, when you really look at it. I would assume that just about anything that can be grown commercially is being grown commercially somewhere in the US.
Frankly, the idea that something wouldn't be grown in the US because it will only grow in tropical climates is the one betraying a lack of knowledge or thinking: as pointed out above, Hawaii is tropical and, while it was the last State to join our glorious union, it's been a State for longer than most of us have been alive.

Hawai'i is the largest commercial producer of bananas in the US....and parts of it do seem to be tropical.
