Please bring your child inside!

It was raining the other day and a lady came in and asked in mostly spanish with a few words of english about where to find loaves of bread.

I showed her and once again she started asking questions and getting annoyed when i couldn't understand her. She starts getting even more annoyed waving her arm, waving the bread, and pointing through the glass doors. I turn to look.

She left her toddler outside, in her stroller, in the rain. WTF?!?! I turn leaving the lady with the bread and get her child and bring her inside. Needless to say the lady left with the kid and didn't buy bread.

Holy hell lady, how did you think that was a good idea? I assure everyone out there it is completely acceptable to bring your children into convenience stores.

When I worked at Large Chain Video Rental Store there was a laundrymat next door. People would send their small children over to watch our TV, which was required to be on "Family Friendly" programming. Kids would sit on the floor alone for hours watching TV. Sometimes I wished that a kid would get kidnapped so these parents would get a clue.

My friend was trying to start an overnight babysitting service (for parents who need a night away with the SO or hanging out, whatever), part of the contract stated that if the children were not picked up by 10am the next morning she would be taking the kids to the police station as "abandoned"....lol. She never got it started, but it wouldve been interesting if she had...

Isn't it "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" where their mothers left them outside of the stores in strollers and that's how they met? And then years later they don't really go IN the stores - they just kinda loiter around outside? That's what this made me think of....

granted even the mothers in that movie didn't leave their kids IN THE RAIN. I have no idea why someone would think it wasn't okay to bring their child in..... unless the store was really small or cramped or something.....but then, come back and shop when you don't have your kid - or bring someone else with you to watch them. Ugh is it really that hard?

Maybe since a lot of celebrities are worthless parents, the average Joe and Jane want to follow suit.

Oh the horror it will be. Just give it a while before everyone starts driving around with their baby in their lap!

Blas- sorry but I don't agree . . .
I have read / not read in some cases - way more stories of good celebrity parenting than not.
However their are a few that aren't the best examples that are continually in the press

(not read meaning they are doing a good job - no sensational story to tell and keep the kids out of the press)

At first I thought the story will be she left her teen or 8 year old kid outside, and they could speak English. So it would be a case of "Why don't you bring your kid in so he/sher can speak to me in English.

I've been to places in South American and I never seen anyone leave their kid outside. The woman must have been mental.

I was at a bowling alley a couple weeks ago, and this hispanic couple left their toddler in a stroller all the way across the alley so they could get more tokens for games. They weren't even watching her!

And I'd love to have an on-topic story, but the vast majority of child problems in my store are parents who either ignore a screaming infant, give in to a toddler's temper tantrum immediately, or have tired kids who throw things out of the cart to get attention.

I used to work in a kid's furniture store in a mall. It was small and upscale, and parents were encouraged to let their children try our bunk beds with supervision. Unfortunately, a lot of parents also considered us to be daycare. It was not uncommon to see children playing with no apparent supervision. If their parent was not in the store, it was our policy to ask them to leave (as long as they were old enough to be out in the mall alone) or, if they were young, to call security to take them away as a lost child. Most of the children were between 4 and 7, so that's what we did most often.

I have to say, it was always deeply satisfying when we knew a child was safe with security and saw a parent come in, take a glance around and then start to panic because her Precious Snowflake was not where she left him (ie, with strangers!)
