  • "let drop off junior at the library" uh, no (longish)

I work late night Mondays. We close at 9pm. Around 7 the security guards bring me this kid who is 6. The kid said that his dad dropped him off and won't be back for 2 hours, dad went across the street. So the guards want to know waht to do with the kid. I said "call the cops," then I said talk to the chief of Central, who was working tonight.

The chief decided security should hold on the to kid. At one point they take him around the library to find his dad.

Dad shows up 30-40 min. latter. I missed part of the conversation with the guards, and the chief already went up stairs. But the dad was saying, "I always done this and no one said anything before. He would go upstairs to get books (in the Childrens' area) and I would park my car and go up to the Children's area."

huh, takes you 40 min. to park? When we have a garage? Personally, I think he went to get a beer or smoke or something.

He was told the rules, kids can't be in the library without a parent or guardian if they are less than 14. I don't think he got that. I think his mind was saying:
These people are making up shit just to fuck with me. Even though they are showing me something with the rules on it, this is bullshit.

Anyway, some support staff supervisor was telling him we just want to make sure his child was kept safe. I tell her after he leaves that I don't think he understood what we were trying to tell him (it's against the policy to leave a kid unattended) and she repeats what she told him to me. Um, why? I'm not arguing, just pointing out the man probably didn't get that there's a policy to keep kids with their parents.

What a worthless parent. Unfortunately, this isn't the only story you'll ever read about parents dumping their children at libraries, stores, restaurants, etc while they go do their thing.

If your kids are such a detriment, you shouldn't have had them.

Reminds me of a show I was watching. This guy got paroled and he was asked what he was going to do know. He said that he would be fine as long as the police left him alone.

It's amazing how some people's minds work.

The number of people who treat the library as a sort of babysitting service is mind-boggling. I can't think of any particular stories offhand, but it was far and away the #1 gripe children's librarians had against patrons.

When I was 13 I'd long been going into my library, on my own, playing on the computer's games for an hour (Haunted House and DK Musical Instruments - fun!! ) and then replenish my week's supply of books. Never had any trouble. This was only 8 years ago...

Maybe today they think all kids need someone there to tell them what books to look at.

Again, this kid is 6. Most teens do have enough sense not to go with strangers (unless someone can dupe them) but a 6 year old usually expects adults to take care of him/her. Granted, there are a bunch of 6 year olds who will have fit if anyone but mommy was trying to touch him (say, a teacher trying to hold his hand as she shows him how to hold a pencil, or even a person trying to give a friendly pat on the head), but this kid had no problem with the security detaining him. It's not like the security here wears something like what a policeman wears.

Oh, the kid was six? Then that's fair enough - I was going on the 14 you mentioned...:S

And I think lil kids can recognise when someone's trying to help them. When me and Red were in the supermarket last, we found this crying girl about 7ish and we led her to customer services. Gave us the warm fuzzies when we saw the impromptu reunion.

(...but all the way home I couldn't help but think of the Jamie Bulger case.)

What is wrong with these people? Why do they think a library is a day care center?

Wow... I won't even let my kids go alone up to the children's section if I'm *IN* the library with them! we usually go to teh kids' section first, then come downstairs so I can choose *my* books - if they're too tired or cranky, I go back on the weekend when they're at their dad's house and I can browse at my leisure

I just found out from one of the guards the boy was left at the library 4 hours by himself before the guard said anything that day. The guard was telling me he noticed the boy in the Childrens section, then when he was assigned downstairs latter on he noticed the boy of the first floor. So that's when the guard asked him about his parents and the boy said his mom was out of town and his daddy dropped him off to park the car.
                      4 hours!

I used to go to the library in my village alone at the age of 10; then again, that's a hell of a lot of difference between me and a 6 year old. That father should have gotten a goldfish instead of having a child; after five minutes, any neglect or cruelty would have been wiped from Fishy's mind.

6 year old left unattended in a semi-public place for 4 hours?

Next time call social services, they'll take the kid and charge the parent with abandonment.

wow. mom never did that with me. it wasn't until i was in my pre-teens when she'd drop me off alone... and more often than not she was with me anyway cos she wanted books to read too.
