Just to be sure : isn't Ranch dressing made with... onions ?"I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question."

Ranch Dressing is good on fries . . .so is gravy (take your pick brown or white) (not at the same time)
I am the type that after the second or third "demand" the next time at the table . . .I would have looked at the child and said "young man/ lady I would like to take a moment to compliment you . . .you are an absolute pleasure to be serving today"
Of course I tend to believe in positive re-enforcement with my passive aggresive side

Oh good lord, I wish I could have told her that. I wasn't aware. I would've loved nothing more than to, as she dug into her third cup of it, "You ARE aware ranch is made with onions, right?"
And ranch is alright on fries, but when you coat the entire damn thing in it, it's pretty gross.
@ Emrld: Good advice. I'll do that next time.

Ranch dressing on fries is pretty standard in a lot of parts of the US. Here I California I get strange looks when I request ketchup.
My sister is incredibly allergic to onions, but she's smart enough to make that clear every time we go out to eat. Unfortunately, a lot of servers are pretty cavalier about it, and we occasionally have issues. My niece is allergic to bell peppers and we have the same problem. It's like a lot of servers just can't comprehend that people could ever be allergic to something so common.
On a side note of unusual allergies, I'm allergic to red jello

I have seen green onion used . . . or minced dried onion or onion powder
most of the time in the home people use a powdered mix (add packet to sour cream, mayo etc)
in that case it tends to be onion powder - some allergies are no longer effected by the time it becomes a powder
As for purchase in a bottle in the grocery . . .not sure what they use.

That's not as weird as you think. Allergic reactions are triggered when a normally harmless protein is recognized by your immune system and your immune system goes into crazy overdrive. In this case the protein is present in raw onions, but the process by which the onions are dehydrated probably unfolds (or denatures) the protein into another shape which isn't recognized by his immune system.Quoth Lingering Grin View PostFunny part though, dehydrated onions don't give him a reaction... so stuff like onion powder, or onion salt, he has no problem with... strangest thing, but he's thankful, it's the only reason he can eat most pizza and fried stuff
