I once worked in a most seedy bar, hey it paid the bills, I was starting out as a bartender and I needed to move up in the world..and I met many characters..
Many many years later I was tending bar at a rather upscale place, very hoity toity..but they were good to me...and he walks in... I knew him straightaway, he was trouble and I'd kicked him out many times before in another world..
He sits, I greet him with my friendly "Hi handsome, what are you having?". It's a Yuengling Lager draft.. I pour it, he seems OK. I keep in my head that last I knew he was not to drink, but thanks to the laws I could no discriminate, I pretty well had to serve him (and I hate to mention, this bar was owned by one ethnicity and they were very biased..me being a mutt always played devil's advocate). I could only refuse service for intoxication, of which he was showing no signs...and this bar being the "other side of the tracks" I treaded very cautiously..
I watch him as he converses with my regulars.. He asks me for a phone.. I direct him to the courtesy phone...
a bit later the cops show up, I find out that not only was he offering some dried beef substance to my regulars, but he was begging for a place to sleep getting mad when they directed him to a shelter and that they were creeped out, but too nice to tell me he had to go..when that failed he called the cops...on himself...
They showed up, I told them that last I knew he wasn't to drink, but he did have a beer
