  • You can't spell Idiot without ID...

It's the summer holidays and as all retail workers know, it's a prime time for underage kids to try to buy alcohol. Today I had a real genius (I made a funny!) try to buy alcohol from me. XD Now, a supervisor had come to the till to discretely tell me that the two guys loading crates of beer on to the belt were with a bunch of much younger kids and not to sell to them. When they got to me, I told them this. One of the guys replied in a thick accent, "That's a stupid rule. We don't have that rule in Germany." I replied that I was sorry, but we do have it here; ie, we can't sell alcohol to someone who is probably going to give it to underage kids. In any case, we could lose our licience if they chose to sit in front of the store and drink it. The guy kept on stubbornly repeating himself; as did I til him and his friend gave up and left sans beer.

Can any German CSers confirm or deny this for me? Do you not have a rule about not letting people buy beer for underage kids?

I'm not from germany but I did a little research and here is what I found.

Germany 16, 18 for distilled beveragesPossession or consumption of alcohol by minors is not outlawed, but it is illegal to sell them alcohol or let them drink in public. "Normal" alcoholic beverages (not distilled beverages) may be consumed in public when in presence of a legal guardian; drinking in private is not controlled. The restrictions on distilled beverages apply also to mixed drinks containing them.

It's the same here. I guess little Günther didn't realize that if you are playing with your friend in his yard, his mommy might have other rules than yours :P

With the idea of the world that kid has, it would be wise not to sell him booze in Germany as well.

Whatever the rules in Germany, I'll bet they don't bend them for foreigners who don't have those rules where they live, either.

If you want to live under the rules you're used to why bother going to the other side of the Atlantic? You don't see me flying to Bombay and whining about the sales tax. Or going to Iran and complaining that I can't get pork rinds.

              LNS,

Please tell me you noted it on your refusal logs?

From what I can read, they only crossed the Channel, not the Pond, but that doesn't change the problem.

my son went to Germany at age 14 with his grandmother and he brought me back a tiny bottle of jack Daniels that he bought himself !

he would have been allowed to drink in the restaurants but I gave instruction that he was not to drink under any circumstances or I would be kickin some butt , yes I woulda kicked me some granny butt

Oh yes; I write down every single instance where I challenge someone, and mark it down as either a refused sale or if they had ID.

                      Fantastic.

You'd be amazed at how many people don't.

How can they resist the brilliant fun of writing down the exact date, restricted item and description of the customer? It honestly is one of my few pleasures in life. XD
