  • She doesn't want to pay and he can't wait 2 hours

    First case:
Woman SC comes up to me asking how to print. I take her to the copier area.
Me: Do you have a library card?
    SC: yes
Me: Ok, you insert the card in this machine, and then add money...
SC: YOU MEAN I Have to PAY! to make print?!?
    Me: yes, it's 15 cents a page.
SC: I can't believe I have to pay to print (mumbles this several times)
Me: If you need any more help I'll be around.
Come to the library, you get free use of the computers, get to check out material for free, take classes for free. But trying to charge you for copies so the public won't copy a ream of paper for each person who walks in for free, wow, we are Nazi Germany.

    Second case:
    OM=Old Man

OM: *calls* Do you have Green Valley by Joe Smith?
Me: We have it here, yes.
OM: Can you send it to the Casey library?
Me: I see that the Casey library has a copy. You can call them when the open at 12 (it's after 10am now)
OM: No, I want you to send the copy to the Casey library.
Me: It will take 3 working days. Since today is Friday, it won't be there till Wed.
OM: Tha'ts fine, I can wait.

Only thing I could think of is he problably thinks he will forget about calling the other library at noon. But if he forgets that, how can he remember to pick up a book on Wed?
Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

I feel your pain depeche. We get that printing question all the time at my library. I'm sorry that 3 cents a page is too expensive when you have access to just about everything else for free.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

Now you know he is not going listen and go back on Monday complaining to the casey library about why the book isn't there? Believe me, that's what SC so special, selective memory.

Yeah, that is likely. But what I did was just place a hold on the book. The next morning when libraries are running their paging list, someone (propably not us, we are way behind) will fill the hold. It could be the Casey (I made up the name of the library) library, could be the library 40 miles away from the Casey library.

I think what he wanted me to do (since I"m such a cynic) is tell him "It's ok, I'll call the Casey library right now and put it on hold for you," after saying the Casey library had the book and he told me he won't call them.

I'm confused. If it was available in the location he was in at that moment, why didn't he just check it out right then? Or am I misunderstanding?

I work at a print center.

People wants refunds for a 7 cent copy because they "didn't need it" anymore...

and with the way things are going up in cost... paper's going to get more expensive too.
personally i'm more for using a scanner and saving the stuff to a computer or card first... then printing it only when necessary. saves on some resources and it's easier to store

You know... I like the compromise that the community college library has for printing... the first 50 pages are free per semester (translated, you pay for 50 pages in your student fees whether or not you use them) and then you pay for anything after that. But I'm sure that they still get SCs who lose it when they go over 50 pages and need to start paying... "but I just got free printouts yesterday..."

Great argument there. Let's see. It's great the library has free use of the computers, so that this way, people like this don't have to buy themselves a computer. Instead, they can freeload off the internet from the library. Then, you can simply check out books to save you from paying those outrageous prices these days on books. However, if all of us were able to get free use of the copy machine, then we wouldn't have a need for Kinko's or Office Max, and these would be the next companies you read about filing for bankrupcy. People like this woman could come in and mass produce things for free. Hell, she could probably print up an entire presentation for her job and save oodles!

The old man calls the library. So he isn't at our library or at the Casey library. The Casey library is closed at the moment since it opens at 12, and the old man called our library. Yeah, so why didnt' he just go or call when the library opened and got the book? I don't know. My money is he has a memory like swiss cheese. He probably read about the book in the newspaper or saw it on some talk show so he calls right away. If he didn't he would forget about it latter on. Which begs the question, how will he remember to pick it up on Wed., the day I said it would arrive from our branch to his branch.

Well, in theory it would be there Wed. I wasn' about to get off my ass and go get the book, do a specific hold on it, wrap it up, walk down to the bins that are books going to branches, and place it there. I just place the book on hold, and the support staff will get it tomorrow. And it might be the support staff from another branch who picks it up and sends it out, or the support staff from the Casey branch. Who knows.

However, if all of us were able to get free use of the copy machine, then we wouldn't have a need for Kinko's or Office Max, and these would be the next companies you read about filing for bankrupcy.
Well, we always charged for copies. Print outs were free for a while when we had 3 computers hooked up to individual printers (printers like a person would have at home) and there was no way to get people to pay. Then we get people who would print out a ream of paper (our paper) about bible verses and stuff. Oh, and the kids who printed out stuff about the WWF or South Park char.

But anyway, people might argue that libraries cut into the book publishers business, since a great number of people don't buy a book, but get it at the library. I think Stephen King wrote something about that, like how people read a book at the library from a particular author, then might go out and buy books by that author.

Funny how you mention that, being Stephen King's books are about the only books I will buy any more. I used to buy books by the buttload, but those days pretty much ended once the family was created. I've also stated this before, but I know people who instead of go to the library, they'll go to the local Barnes & Noble, find the book they want, sit in one of their comfy chairs, then when they're done, mark the page they left off at and go back to continue another day. Sometimes this practice can also cut into the publisher's business, in my opinion.

Yeah, I can get people reading a book at the book store just to see if it's what they want (my mom wanted a book on spanish cards, but the book didn't have all the cards accounted for) but to sit all day and read....that is what the library is for. I guess they don't want anyone to think they are homeless
