Exactly my problem with KC bbq. The specialty there is "burnt ends". Basically, cook a beef brisket (brisquette?) for many many hours. Cut off the blackened ends. Chop up and drown in sauce. Get people to pay $15 for the privelege of chewing on it. (My other problem with KC style is that it tends to be pretty expensive.) My idea of bbq just doesn't include real plates or silverware. I'm a country kid, I guess.
meh when I say burnt, I mean nothing left, just dried crispy food that can't be eaten or tastes like charcol

otherwise, I will eat anything, with or without silverware

then again I am the same girl who does prefer new york style over chicago style pizza but won't get into a fight over which is better

I've lived in Rhode Island all my life, and I never even knew there was another kind of hot dog bun!! It's open on the sides?? Madness!! You'd get condiments all over your fingers!!

No just cut down through the top to about halfway through the bun, not all the way.

In fact, in New England, you CAN'T get the other style of hot dog bun. I tried when I was living there.
I live in MA, and you can get another type of bun here. You can get this kind in all grocery stores: http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thu...ot_dog_bun.jpg

SC: Why is this hotdog bun shaped like a bread?
What else would it be shaped like? All the hot dogs buns I have seen are all the same basic shape. The difference being one is sliced on the top, the other on the side.

The only complaint I ever had about hot dog buns was at Fuddruckers. A long time ago they had hotdogs on wonderful dog-length buns. I loved them. Then one day, shortly after changing ownership, they started using half length buns, with the hogdog sticking way out of both ends. I do not know their rationale for such stupidity. I quit eating their hotdogs.

First time I've seen one cut on the top. (Texan)

Wouldn't matter to me in the end, with our side-open buns, I just turn 'em side ways so the opening's on top anyway. Heck, everyone does that. So what does it matter really? Looks like the top-cut ones are cut closer to the middle than our side-cut ones anyway, so they look like they'd be better overall.

My favorite dog is an italian sausage from Weinerschnitzel, with a bit of ketchup. Comes with grilled peppers and onions and such on top.

I've seen places put their quality down (presumably to save costs) and go bust not long afterwards. It always struck me as a really stupid idea.

There was a cafe where I would always order nearly the same thing, almost every day, because it was delicious - but they rather abruptly stopped selling it. Even though I kept asking if they had it (which should have been another clue that it was in demand). They went bust several months after I determined that there was nothing left worth eating there, and switched to an alternative.

                    *blink*

                    Wait...

That's not the only style of hot-dog bun?

                    Now I'm confused.

They're usually already on the way out by the time they try to save costs that way. The cost-cutting is usually a last-ditch attempt to save money, and it's invariably too late.

this sort of reminds me of the best place I ever ate, only when it went down, we didn't know cause they never went down on quality, which I guess is quite rare in reality

I am sad it's gone though

Most store bought hot dog buns come split down the side, like a hoagie bun... Of course, I hear the original hot dog stand on Coney Island cuts through the top of the bun to serve their hot dogs, but they also refuse to stock ketchup as a condiment. Anything else is fair game, but ketchup is no.
I've heard the same thing regarding ketchup about the original burger joint.

As for the bun difference, I prefer New England buns, but they are slightly smaller than the side-split (which have a tendency to tip over cause they're essentially standing on one end).

I prefer top split buns, mostly cuz I tend to drown my hotdogs in ketchup and mustard. xD

The idea behind the New England bun is that it can be grilled or fried to make a crisp toasted bun. As a Mainer, I HATE buns that are not grilled in butter.
But then again we like red natural casing dogs with fried onion.
Once read one of those "you know you're from Maine" lists that had:..

Kind of like Dr. Pepper and Moon Pies in the south.

To answer the inevitable question "moonpies" are these snackcakes. Two soft chocolate cookies, with marshmallow filling in the middle, all covered with chocolate. At least, that's what my memory is telling me they are. I have actually never had a moon pie.

But I HAVE had RC Cola, which is actually the drink that best compliments such fine Southern cuisine.
