This guy wasn't especially sucky, and I admit to some suck on my own part here, but I haven't had anyone else noteworthy in a couple weeks, so here we go.
I was in an employees only area when this guy stuck his head in and asked for help. He had fairly dark sunglasses on. That's not really relevant, but I found it annoying and somewhat rude, since I can't make proper eye contact with him while he had them on.
Anyway, he wanted to know if we would service a laptop he'd purchased here. I told him we would, and asked what the problem was.
SC: Well, I let my son use it.....
(oh boy, here it comes....)
SC: and he dropped it on the floor.
Me: OK, sir, when you purchased the laptop, did you buy our accidental damage coverage?
SC: No, I didn't buy a warranty.
Me (thinking):
Me: Ok, then is the screen damaged in any way?
SC: No, the screen works, but the power jack is broken.
Me: Ok, well we can have that fixed for you, but it will be on the pricey side. *pulls out tech services pamphlet and flips to the Non-Warranty Repair section* All notebook hardware repairs are a flat charge of $369.99.
SC *snarkily*: OK, that's nearly the cost of a new one!
(Here's where I showed some suck, as I was very blunt with him)
Me: Well sir, that's why we offer accidental damage coverage, and why you should have gotten it. If you had it, this repair would have been free.
SC: But it was too much money for that coverage!
Me: Unless your laptop was more than $1000, then the cost of the coverage would have been less than the cost of this repair.
SC: Why is it so much?!?! All they need to do is resolder the jack!
Me: No sir, it's not that simple. They'll likely have to replace the entire board.
SC *snarkily*: No, they can resolder it!
(If you're so convinced it's that easy, then why didn't you just fix it yourself?)
Me: Sir, even if they could do that, they'd still need to tear down the entire laptop to get at the jack, then put it all back together when it's fixed. That will require a significant amount of labor. But as I said, it isn't that easy, as they will have to replace the entire board that the jack is on. And the cost of the repair in either case will be $370.
SC: You know what? Never mind. I'll think of something else *leaves*
Yeah, sure you will. Assuming Geek Squad or FireDog even offers out-of-warranty laptop repairs (they don't list them on their websites) they will likely charge even more, since pretty much ALL of their services are more expensive than ours.
So unless you want a new computer, you'll be back. And it WILL be $369.99.
