Heh, yup, we've been known to cause our fair share of busts.Quoth edible_hat View PostSo often that around here the electric companies will tell the police if somebody's bill has jumped by a huge amount.
Got one last week actually, had a call from an agent who was out there to do a disconnection to say that when the locksmith had broken in they'd found hundreds of cannabis plants. The policeman who was with them for the legal stuff was veeeery interested.
So, here's a tip people, if your'e gonna grow weed then pay your 'leccie bill.

Wow, major suckitude.
When I get cold, I add more clothing, or light up the woodstove!
I think our highest electric bill ever was about $600, for a summer month - I have issues with overheating and pretty much refrigerate myself and we didnt realize that the AC unit was about to kiss off, and was very unefficient. We replaced it and our bills literally halved the next month.
Right now we are working on reducing our electrical use by changing out our lighting to high efficiency low wattage stuff, changing out older appliances for new energy star ones and getting a solar battery charger and passel of rechargable bateries for all the stuff that has batteries.EVE Online: 99% of the time you sit around waiting for something to happen, but that 1% of action is what hooks people like crack, you don't get interviewed by the BBC for a WoW raid.

How do you know they aren't making them up?Quoth depechemodefan View Post
Thank God none of them have been making up kids, since we don't require to see the kid for the kid to get a card. But unfortunately they are popping out kids at least 1 every 3 years.I was not hired to respond to those voices.

hehe We don't have to take them to court either. However, I have seen debts amounting to several tens of thousands of dollars. How? Person apartment hops from place to place, racking up bills and skipping out on them. Then one day, we connect the dots and rake all of those debts into one big pile and dump it on them when we track them down... instant cut-off (except in winter, we don't cut people off in winter, and we'll even put their power back ON between Dec 15 and March 15). And we are SO lenient when it comes to repayment. If they get cut off, it's really because they had no intention whatsoever of paying the bill.Quoth pssorens View PostI'm doing the math on the fly here, but thats almost 5000 us dollars. I cannot see how a bill could ever get that high, even over several months with out one of the following happening.
(a). some kind of massive electrical problem with the house
or
(B). every house on the block is running a extension cord from her house.
I don't think I've ever seen a bill over 300 even when it was close to disconnection. Of course, in the states we don't have to take people to court to shut off service for nonpaymentGK/Kara/Jester fangirl.

Somehow that wouldn't surprise me. The only times we rack up a 3-figure electric bill is December and summer.Quoth porkinator View PostConsidering this woman is already playing the 'Christmas Card' it wouldn't surprise me if she had covered her house in fairy lights since March and that's the reason her bill is so high.
Consider a programmable thermostat. They run $30-$100 at our local big-box hardware store and don't take long to pay for themselves. Why run the heat (in winter) or air (in summer) if you aren't at home?Quoth AccountingDrone View PostRight now we are working on reducing our electrical use by changing out our lighting to high efficiency low wattage stuff, changing out older appliances for new energy star ones and getting a solar battery charger and passel of rechargable bateries for all the stuff that has batteries.I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Mine was $700 but that included the connection fee and was for 2 quarters because their billing system screwed up. So they gave us 3 months to pay.Quoth AccountingDrone View PostI think our highest electric bill ever was about $600, for a summer month - I have issues with overheating and pretty much refrigerate myself and we didnt realize that the AC unit was about to kiss off, and was very unefficient. My Mom has one of those digital thermostats too. She loved it, saved us a lot of money living in TN.
I wish I could have one here in Houston but I can't since I'm renting. Luckily, the landlords pay for the utilities. So it's not too bad.Ridiculous 2009 Predictions: Evil Queen will beat Martha Stewart to death with a muffin pan. All hail Evil Queen! (Some things don't need elaboration.....) -- Jester
