  • I once knew a whore who was so entitled

    How entitled was she?

She was so entitled, she asked for a discount for being an employee for a company that's not affiliated with our hotel chain.

I had a lady call this evening who asked what our rate was for an airline employee. Since we don't really have one, I quote her the rack rate. She gives me that very snarky tone of voice. You know the one.

    EW: For an airline employee?

Yes, woman, you're being quoted a rate everyone else has to pay. As soon as your airline starts giving discounts to hotel employees, we'll start talking.
To right the countless wrongs of our days... We shine this light of true redemption, that this place may become as paradise...Oh, what a wonderful world such would be...

Yeah, those are fun. When I worked for (cell phone company), at least 3 calls a day would be,"But that sounds really high. Can't you lower it because help the homeless/run a marathon/think of the children?"

Bargaining and then arguing about not getting your way is not a way to manipulate someone into giving you a discount.
I have a...thing. Wanna see it?

When I worked in the order department, I would get a few people a week asking for a discount because they work for that power tool company. Nice try but no dice.

I will concede that I will ask if there is a military discount. But I take "no" as an answer.

I've gotten people asking for a senior discount of their prescription copays, which is impossible.

On the flip side though, I do get discounts at two hotel chains, my cell phone company, and several other companies not affiliated with my company.

yeah, I must say, asking for an airline discount isn't inherintly sucky (quite a few hotel's do offer discounts to all travel industry employees, be they travel agents, airline employees, hell, we'll give discounts to employees of competing chains even, if there's nothing available at the chain they work for).
Not accepting that the hotel she was talking to wasn't one of them though is quite sucky.

In which case, wouldn't it be even cheaper ordering it direct from the factory?

Obviously airline employees are worthier than mere mortals.

In some cases, it is cheaper but some companies will not sell directly to consumers. They only sell to distributors and other warehouse locations. I get that response alot when I work customer service on Saturday shift.
For the other companies, I just cannot explain.

We once looked at an apartment complex that offered discount rent to people who worked at the company I worked at at the time.

We didn't take it since the rent was way too much for what they offered, but it was the first time I came across a place that offered a discount to employees of certain companies.

                          They get a half discount.

My dad worked at a place that had a store in the plant that sold their goods at discounted prices (picture getting 50 candy bars for like $2-5); then they were bought out, now the employees go to the store in town to buy candy because, get this, it's more expensive at the company store for many things than it is at the store that everyone can shop at! The real shocking thing is, some of the product comes from not even 200 ft away.

Of course the hotel in town sometimes has discounted rates for different businesses in town -- but they're also known for renting one entire building (50 rooms) multiple times a year too. The hotel had to double their capacity because before that, we had a hotel that never had rooms. Even now, they're full frequently (with the company's in town being the reason).
