  • Please don't encourage them!

Well, work has been crazy. So crazy that I don't have much time to peruse my favorite board anymore. I most definitely don't have time to post while working.

When the weather gets as bad as it has, when the snow flies, and the roads freeze, the state highway patrol will prohibit tow services on all highways. Iowa is bad...the flakes fall and everything seems to shut down. Either that, or Iowa is just the pit of the United States where all the snow and ice collect as if by some magnetic snowy force.

My job the other day was to monitor the queue where all the calls that came in in areas under tow ban were placed. There's no exact science to this. I check the department of transportation website for closures and as they are lifted, I get service to the vehicles.

Some people understand that even as these bans are lifted, this does not mean service will arrive in no time. Most often, it's still going to take several hours because there are several vehicles stranded.

Then, there are the occasional entitlement whores who believe that they are the only fuckwads on the planet and they should be taken care of immediately if not sooner.

I had this one customer call the contractor directly. My conversation with this cretin went as follows:

ME: <I didn't quite understand at first> So, the contractor called you and told you the time of arrival?
SC: No. He didn't. He said there are 20 calls ahead of me.
ME: Well, there are many vehicles stuck. So, he called you and...
    SC: No, I called him.
ME: You called him and he gave you a time of arrival?
SC: No, he didn't. He can't tell me when he'll be there.
ME: Did he tell you he'd call you when he gets close to getting to your call?
SC: No, I'm going to call him.
ME: You're going to call him when you're with the vehicle?
SC: No, I'm going to call him and continue to call him until he realizes he needs to get my call done now!
ME: *blink* You're going to just call and call until you succeed in making him do your call as soon as possible.
SC: *very matter-of-factly* Yes. I will call again and again until he gets to my call.

She was not stranded. As a matter-of-fact, she was sitting nearby at a local casino. I would understand if she was stranded with her vehicle, but that never happens. We NEVER leave a person stranded with a vehicle. We always ensure their safety. This lady was simply a bitch.

I call the contractor in order to let him know that I talked to this customer and he stated that she had called him and 'reamed me a good one'. He asked for her phone number because he was going to finish the call he was on and go do her call next just to get her out of his hair.

NO! Don't encourage that behavior. If I were him, I'd just hang up on her. Let us deal with her wrath...we have trained professionals who can deal with entitlement whores in times like this in an appropriate manner...make 'em wait like everyone else! GAH!

And once again we see why behavior like that is encouraged by magazine and newspaper "consumer advocates" and other news outlets; Because it works, dammit.

How nice that other people had to stay stranded in frigid cold temperatures because that bitch had to be a, well, bitch.

Personally, I feel that expedited service should be available to this woman, but at a premium cost. Here in the real world, customers pay for better service. If she wanted to be placed ahead of everyone else, she should've been charged more. Not sure if the OP is able to do this, but it would've been nice. Getting this woman to pay a premium cost is another matter, however.

Penalty delay would work just fine, too.

Many years ago, when I worked at McDonald's we actually did something like this on an informal basis. If someone came through our drive-thru and was a douche-bag, they often got hit with what I called a "Prick Tax." Basically we'd charge them for everything we possibly could, even if we'd never normally ring it up: charges for extra condiments, napkins, cheese, etc.

Swear at us or call us names? Prick Tax.
Throw your money or change at us? Prick Tax.
Intentionally mess up our seating or drive-thru area? Prick Tax.

It never added up to more then $.25-$.50 but it made us feel better knowing that these folks were "paying" for these SCness.
