Last night, one of my co-workers had a customer that asked if our salads could be purchased with foodstamps. My CW asked me (in front of the customer) and I said, "Yes, cold items can, but hot items cannot." The woman ordered her salads and went on about her shopping. After awhile, she returned and began perusing the hot foods. She ordered a bunch of food and as she walked away, I told my co-worker, "That's all going to come back, just wait."
I knew it was going to happen, but I couldn't say anything, because there were other customers there by that time. I couldn't just say, "You know you can't buy this with food stamps, right?" in front of other people. It would sound pretty bad to the other customers, who weren't aware of the context. Plus, she'd probably complain and end up with free food, and I'd get yelled at for being rude.
Sure enough, five minutes later, I heard the front-end manager being called to a register, and I saw the customer standing there. The hot food came back, and since it left my line of sight, I had to throw it away. That made me sad. Those commercials depicting emaciated children in third-world countries popped into my mind as I tossed away $30 in BBQ ribs and shrimp, in between thoughts of throttling just a tiny bit of sense into that woman.
