I've never eaten ona flight as I am allergic to cheese and generally think the staff have better things to do than clean up after a honking Boggles!

I have noticed a couple of times that the person next to me hears me say no thank you to the attendant and then pipes up with "I'll have an extra one."

How the attendants avoid slapping them and/or sending them outside i do not know!

Though... do those "special meal" requests actually work. I could have sworn I clicked the option before for a flight and ... when it came time for food, it all looked like the same meal. not that i cared much, i'd jsut wanted to try something different

Once we were on a Continental flight out of Houston for NO when the flight attendant kept showing up at our seats and demanding to know if my teenage daughter was deaf. It was annoying. Her reasoning was that neither of us, but particularly the daughter were paying attention to the safety demo, you know, the one where they try to make you believe a seat cushion is going to save your ass when the plane crashes in the ocean and pointing out the exits, like that's actually going to help. I explained again and again to the attendant that because of the daughter's many mission trips she's actually been on planes a total of 12 times that summer and she was sick. They still kept saying she must be deaf and need special assistance. It was all very weird.

I agree that the F/A was rude BUT:

It has been proven time and time again that passengers who know exactly what to do have a greater chance of escaping alive. A plane can be destroyed by fire within 90 seconds. Every second makes a difference. I advise people to count the seat backs to their nearest row as in the fire/dark/smoke it could be very very hard or your nearest exit may be unusable.

Sorry to get on my high horse but after 6 weeks of training learning all this stuff and practising it all I take it very seriously. I may not love my job, I don't like the passengers BUT I always take safety and security very seriously as that's what we are there for.

Also there are many many variations of planes up there. Even if you fly 12 times you could easily be flying on 12 different types of plane.

Yes. But it's all the same old crap!

The only thing extra I may ask for during a flight is more to drink. And by drink, I mean soda or water.

I just get incredibly thirsty while on an airplane, particularly if its a long flight. I can do without food for a very long time, but not liquids, and I hate it when my mouth is parched.

Again, that is not annoying. We get you are thirsty, it's mega dry up there. After all, we are there primarily for your safety...but also for your comfort. It's the pax who press their call bells constantly asking for more wine/beer etc. Why not come to the galley and ask for some a drink instead? I have no problem in getting people drinks, it's pax on one flight recently who kept pressing the call bell for beer. No please or thanks, just beer. I did lose my temper in the end but I won't tell you what I did.

That is an excellent tip! I'll have to remember to do that.

I always thought that airline portion sizes were small because eating more at those altitudes / pressure isn't good for you (at least that is what my Mom told me). That and drinks are "stronger" per each 10.000 feet. (i.e. one drink at 20,000 ft. is like having two at sea level). My Mom had very specific science to back up what she told me so I always believed her. Bear in mind though that this is a Mom who explained the DNA helix to me (6 yrs old) long before she explained the "birds and the bees".
