So what would you do/think

So we are down to just four lighters,until friday delivery.So I took them out out of the plastic container and laid them by the crystal lights by the register.I can't count how many people have tried to walk away with them. And when I yell at them they say oh I thought they were free or I thought someone had left them.So heres my question...
Do any of you walk out of stores with something before you ask about it?In SC's
way of thinking anything can be free.I finally had to put prices on each lighter.One guy did manage to walk out the door.He comes in everyday and HE WILL pay for the lighter tommorrow.

This. Most places I get my cigs at sometimes offer me a free jewel lighter with a pack. Not that I'd take one without it being distinctly offered to me, but I can see their logic.

Taking it out of the display container was a mistake. People walk off with pens all the time, I don't think they'd be any more discriminating about lighters.

It's true that one often gets a free lighter when buying cigarettes at the local shop, but it's free because the guy GIVES it to you... I find that just taking things from stores is not generally acceptable

When I was at the gas station we would give away free books of cheap ass matches with a purchase of ciggs. Or just any purchase really, if they were being nice. And every time we ran out I had to deal with people trying to take of with crap lighters since we didn't have any matches for them...uhg.
I actually did post a sign saying that if you could abstain from playing with the lighters the entire time you were in the store I would walk over to the door with you and let you bum a light off whatever lighter you wanted.
That actually solved a lot of problems.

If your store is constantly giving free lighters away. Then I can see why they would think that.

I also think taking them out of the plastic display was a mistake. Put them back and you shouldn't have too many problems.
